Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants is an independent, family-owned restaurant group based in Chicago that owns, manages and licenses more than 110 restaurants in Illinois, Minnesota, Maryland, Nevada, Texas, Virginia, Florida, Washington D.C. We were founded in June 1971 by Richard Melman and Jerry A. He started as a dishwasher (and hated his first raw oyster), and now he’s Shaw's Crab House’s one-man roaming raw bar.

Ever wonder how Mon Ami Gabi got its name? We actually have legendary French Chef Jean Banchet to thank.

In the late '90s, Chef Gabino Sotelino and Rich Melman were on the patio brainstorming ideas for their new French bistro. They had the concept, but they were missing one crucial piece: the name.

The answer arrived unexpectedly when Jean Banchet pulled up in his brand-new Ferrari, spotted Gabino across the patio, and called out: "Hey Mon Ami Gabi!"

Rich heard it and knew on the spot that was it. Meaning "My friend Gabi," it captured the exact warmth and personal touch they wanted for the entire restaurant.
