Gene & Georgetti was founded in 1941 by Gene Michelotti and his partner Alfredo Federighi, who was nicknamed “Georgetti” after a famous Italian cyclist. Located in the heart of River North, Gene & Georgetti is Chicago’s oldest and one of its finest steakhouses. Partners Gene and “Georgetti” worked hand in hand to establish the reputation of excellence that is continued through today. Born in the s

mall Tuscan town of Lucca, Italy, Gene Michelotti came to the United States at the age of 15, several years later; he married Ida Passaglia in April of 1938. Though he spoke little to no English upon his arrival, he worked numerous jobs ranging from night watchman, porter, dishwasher, and bartender, where he encountered his future business partner Alfredo “Georgetti” Federighi, who was working as a chef. Alfredo had the kitchen, and Gene was the front man, holding down the bar. His genuine and vivacious personality made him a hit with regulars, politicians and celebrities alike. Upon Alfredo’s death in 1969, Gene became the sole proprietor of Gene & Georgetti, until his death is 1989. Gene’s daughter Marion married Tony Durpetti in 1969. They have one daughter, Michelle. Upon the death of Gene in 1989, Although a CEO of his own national radio advertising firm, Tony and Marion did not want to see the restaurant leave the family, and decided to purchase it from Marion’s mother, Ida Michelotti. Together with a staff that embodies the word family; they work to maintain the tradition that defines this classic institution and proudly bring it into the future. Legends like Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, & Lucille Ball as well as modern day celebrities like Russell Crowe, Keanu Reeves, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell, along with international, national, and local politicians, have helped make Gene & Georgetti a classic old-time Chicago place to dine. The restaurant proudly boasts a legion of regular customers, some going back more than 50 years

A recipient of the DiRona award in 2001, (Distinguished Restaurants Of North America) – established in the 1990’s as the only non-profit inspections program in the world to exclusively evaluate fine dining restaurants the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Gene & Georgetti is proud to be the first steakhouse in Chicago to have won this prestigious award. Together with a loyal and dedicated staff, Tony and Marion Durpetti proudly maintain the tradition of quality and service that has defined G&G for over 80 years.

Join us for patio dining in a setting steeped in Chicago history 🌹

Built in the years after the Great Chicago Fire, our old structure was part of a city rebuilding itself from ash, smoke, and chaos. Some say buildings like this were only meant to stand temporarily…yet here we are, nearly 150 years later!

Chicago lasted.
This building lasted.
And somehow, so have we.

Through generations of family dinners, deals made over steaks, weddings, celebrations, late nights, hard years, these walls have seen it all.

“The fact that Gene’s Bistro is still open and still paying Gene & Georgetti the monthly fee — without providing sales records — did not discourage Durpetti from taking what she calls her “David vs. Goliath” fight against the concession giant to the next level.

“They leveraged our reputation, our status, the fact that we’re women-owned — to strengthen that bid and win the bid, then moved on to something better when it appeared,” Durpetti told the Sun-Times Tuesday.”

For 85 years, Gene & Georgetti has been part of the fabric of Chicago. What began as a small family business built through hard work, resilience, relationships, and hospitality has grown into something far bigger than a restaurant. It is a legacy my family, our team, and this city have helped shape together over generations. It is the American dream really, and one we are so proud of.

Today, legal action was filed regarding the planned termination of Gene’s Bistro at Midway Airport, despite 15 years remaining on what was intended to be a long term agreement.

This has never simply been about one location. For me, this is about accountability, transparency, and standing up for independent businesses whose names, reputations, and decades of work carry real value.

We entered this partnership in good faith and honored every commitment asked of us, including through COVID and what was undoubtedly one of the most difficult moments the hospitality industry has faced. I believe deeply in protecting not only our family business, but also the integrity of local operators navigating partnerships like these every day. Independent restaurants could be considering an agreement like this with a concessionaire like this, and we believe they should know who and what they are really dealing with.

As third generation at Gene & Georgetti, this is about honoring legacy too. I grew up watching my family pour everything they had into this business, not only to preserve what was built before us, but to continue evolving it with care, pride, and purpose for future generations.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who has supported my family, our team, and our legacy throughout this process. Your messages, encouragement, and belief in what Gene & Georgetti represents mean more than I could ever fully express.

Chicago has shaped us for more than eight decades, and we remain deeply proud to continue fighting for the future of this institution and the people behind it.
