Whiskey of the Week: Sagamore Spirit Rye Double Oak

This is straight rye whiskey (which was our W.o.W back in February!) for 4 to 5 years in high-char new American oak barrels and then aged whiskey into toasted wave stave barrels for an additional 18 months. The increased surface area of the low-char, medium-plus-toast staves imparts Double Oak’s delightful caramel, toffee, hazelnut, and toasted coconut.

This is the flagship whiskey for Wilderness Trail. When it launched, it was the first bottled-in-bond wheated sweet mash bourbon released since Prohibition.

Mashbill: 64% Corn | 24% Wheat | 12% Malted Barley

Color: Rich, unfiltered deep amber
Nose: Sweet vanilla and charred oak
Taste: Caramel and vanilla, leading to a cordial meeting of oak, cinnamon, and blood orange with a palate-coating mouthfeel

Aged in ex-Bourbon American Oak casks, and Spanish Oloroso Sherry and PX casks

NOSE: Blackcurrant, brown sugar, orange, plum and raisin notes.
TASTE: Fruit and syrup. Hazelnut with hints of cinnamon and lemon. A butterscotch sweetness adds to the overall complexity.
FINISH: A vibrant and fruity, smooth whisky with long lasting oaky sweetness.
