Len Ciannamea knows good pizza.
(326)

That’s because he is continuing a 56-year legacy that began before he was even born. Ciannamea is the owner of Capri’s Pizza, 837 N. Main St., Schererville, which opened in November. The dine-in pizzeria is the third location in the Capri’s family, with its predecessor located in Whiting, and the original store which is still open today in South Chicago. In 1955, Len Ciannamea’s father, Tony Ciannamea, opened Capri’s on Commercial Ave. in the South Chicago neighborhood. Tony Ciannamea immigrated to the U.S. from Italy in 1951, and besides already having a love for Italian food, he developed his culinary skills in the U.S military, where he worked as a cook. From there, he decided he wanted to be his own boss, and opened the pizzeria, which was originally located up the street from its currently location at 88th and Commercial avenues. He retired in 1991, and is, to this day, a fan of the pizza he created. For many years, Tony Ciannamea ran the pizzeria by himself with the help of a worker, and in the 1970s, he took on a partner. From there, Capri’s evolved and opened a second location in Whiting in 1993. Over the years, Capri’s became well known for its broasted chicken as well as its thin crust pizzas, with a secret family recipe sauce that combines the perfect amount of spices and sweetness.
