Some moments mean a little more.

This AAPI Heritage Month, we had the honor of catering an event with the Mayor of Chicago and sharing Cambodian food alongside so many incredible members of the AAPI community.

As a women-owned Cambodian restaurant founded by genocide survivors, opportunities like this remind us why we do what we do to preserve our culture, share our stories, and create space for Cambodian voices to be seen and celebrated.

And yes, the Mayor did suggest Cambodian food should become the official food of Chicago. We won’t argue with that. šŸ‡°šŸ‡

Thank you for having us. The work continues, one dish at a time.

Nate!
For a little over a year, Nate has been helping keep the heart of Khmai running. Making sure every plate that leaves the kitchen is something we’d be proud to serve our own family.

If he could eat one thing every day, it would be Somlor Machu..

A fun fact? He’s allergic to peaches. šŸ‘šŸš«

When he’s not at Khmai, you’ll usually find him helping coordinate events and giving back to the community. Serving people isn’t just something he does at work it’s part of who he is.

And if you ask him for advice, he’ll keep it simple:

ā€œLock in before you get in the door.ā€

Meaning show up ready. Ready to work. Ready to learn. Ready to give your best.

That’s the kind of mindset that helps our team grow.

And one more thing...

šŸŽ‚ Nate’s birthday is June 22.

If you see him around the restaurant this month, be sure to wish him a happy birthday.

The people behind the food matter just as much as the food itself. And we’re grateful Nate is part of the Khmai family. ā¤ļøšŸ‡°šŸ‡

This week we had the honor of catering an Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month event at the Chicago Cultural Center.
And somewhere in the middle of the night, Mayor Brandon Johnson joked that he may need to make an executive order to make Cambodian food the food of Chicago.
We laughed.
But truthfully… moments like this mean a lot.
Cambodian food hasn’t always had a spotlight.
So every time our culture gets celebrated loudly and proudly, we carry that with us.
Thank you Chicago for continuing to show up for us, for our stories, and for our food.
We’re just getting started. šŸ‡°šŸ‡

Ava has been working with us since the beginning of Khmai on Sheridan. She started with us two days after we opened.

Ava is one of your wonderful tour guides aka your server. Ava helps us bring the Cambodian story to life in the restaurant. She uses her talents in her experimental theatre work often. She helped us tremendously when we had our Khmai Tales experience last year.

When Ava isn’t doing her theatre work or helping create a wonderful dining experience in the restaurant she is enjoying long bike rides when the weather is right. Hanging out with her animal child her (cat)

If she could have the Bai Bampoung everyday she would.

Thank you Ava for always bringing your energy and time to Khmai!

There was a time when showing up wasn’t optional.
You cooked with what you had.
You worked with who was there.
You didn’t waste food. You didn’t waste effort.

That doesn’t leave you. Not ever.

So when we say we’re hiring back of house at Khmai…
we’re not just looking for experience.

We’re looking for people who care.
People who move with intention.
People who understand that every plate that leaves this kitchen carries more than food it carries history.

Some nights are loud.
Some nights test you.
But every night, we stand together and get it done.

If you’ve worked a line… you know.
If you haven’t, but you’re willing to learn the right way… we’ll teach you.
