National Coffee Day had me looking back at one of my favorite moments from my own coffee journey. ☕️🌱

Uganda was my most recent trip to the African continent — my seventh — and getting to see coffee growing, being harvested and handled locally was something I won’t forget.

There’s something very different about holding coffee at the beginning of its journey instead of only experiencing it once it reaches a café.

Travel has given me so many beautiful memories, but experiences like this also shape how I think about what we’re building at Bridge View Brew.

Coffee doesn’t begin with an espresso machine or a menu. Long before it reaches us in South Chicago, there are people, land, knowledge, work and stories behind it.

That’s something I hope we continue learning about — and sharing — at BVB. 🧡☕️

Good Monday morning from Bridge View Brew. ☀️☕️

This was the view from 92nd Street during the 7 o’clock hour this morning — our sign out front, the sun coming up over Commercial Avenue, and the bridge that inspired our name in the distance.

And just like that, we’re starting week two.

Bridge View Brew is now open Monday through Friday from 7 AM–1 PM at 3008 E. 92nd Street.

Stop in for coffee, espresso drinks, chai, smoothies, a place to sit, or simply to finally see the space you’ve been watching us build.

Our Saturdays are also becoming a time for community events and gatherings, which is exactly the kind of neighborhood use we always hoped this space would have.

Our first Saturday during soft opening was a FULL one. ☕️🧡

We don’t even have regular Saturday hours posted yet, but two separate groups asked to use Bridge View Brew as a gathering space today, so we decided to open the doors.

One group gathered before heading out into the neighborhood, and later the Chicago Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held its monthly book club here.

In between, neighbors stopped in, other people found us while walking by, drinks kept going across the counter, and before long the shop was full.

We made espresso drinks, smoothies and chai. Someone asked for matcha, and since we had just been testing it, we decided to give it a try — whole milk, vanilla and lavender — and it got two thumbs up.

We also ran out of straws. 😂

And honestly, that’s exactly what this soft-opening period is for.

We’re learning what people order, what supplies we go through faster than expected, what works behind the bar, how the space flows when it’s full, and all the tiny things you only discover once real people are actually using the shop.

Today was busy. We’re tired. But it was the good kind of tired.

Seeing Bridge View Brew full of people talking, organizing, reading, drinking coffee and simply spending time together felt like a glimpse of what we’ve been working toward all these years.

When school is out…but your mom owns a coffee shop. 👀

Since today happens to be Dolly Parton Day, we decided a little 9 to 5 theme was appropriate at Bridge View Brew.

She spent part of her CPS day off helping around the shop — testing our matcha, redoing the menu board, sweeping, chatting with people, and turning our plain cup sleeves into little pieces of encouragement with handwritten messages and artwork.

And she was actually really helpful. 🥹🧡

What made it especially sweet for me is that she has been part of this journey from the beginning. She remembers this building when it was dark, rough and honestly a little scary-looking. Now she gets to stand behind the counter, experiment with drinks and see people actually enjoying the space her family spent years building.

She may have thought she was just hanging out at Mom’s coffee shop today, but she was also getting a little lesson in work, creativity, hospitality and family business.

I’m proud of her.

And yes… she clocked out well before 5. 😂☕️

A little Bridge View Brew in every detail. ☕️🧡

From the coffee in the cup to the logo on the counter, it feels good seeing more and more of this place come together.

Bridge View Brew has been built slowly, intentionally, and with South Chicago at the center of it all. Every little detail is another reminder that what started as an idea is becoming a real neighborhood space.

The places that raise us matter.

Seeing the news today about Chicago honoring Dr. Donda West with a street naming in South Shore immediately brought me back to these pictures.

A little while ago, I stood in the backyard of the South Shore home where Donda once raised her son and watched my own two youngest daughters play.

At the time, I remember thinking how surreal that little moment felt.

Not because they understood where they were — they definitely didn’t. 😂 They were just babies running around a backyard.

But I understood.

And now I watch those same girls run around Bridge View Brew in nearby South Chicago. They were born here. They’re growing up here. They’ll go to school here. They know this coffee shop as simply another place where their family spends time, without yet understanding everything it took to build it.

That’s what struck me today.

Neighborhood history isn’t only something that happened before us. These communities are still raising children, developing talent, building businesses and creating stories whose endings none of us know yet.

I have no idea what my girls will grow up to do.

But I love that they are growing up surrounded by reminders that remarkable stories can begin right here on the South Side.

Congratulations to the West family and everyone celebrating the legacy of Dr. Donda West today. 🧡

Somehow I never properly shared this part of the Mexican Independence Day Parade. That was me in there!!! 😂

From 87th Street to 99th Street — about 1.5 miles — dressed as a cup of coffee.

When you’re building a neighborhood coffee shop, apparently “other duties as assigned” can include becoming the coffee. ☕️😂

Last week at Bridge View Brew, we were focused on menu quality control. This week, we’re testing something just as important: when South Chicago actually wants coffee.

☕ Monday, Sept. 21–Friday, Sept. 25
⏰ 7:00 AM–12:00 PM

We’re using this week to learn the rhythm of 92nd & Commercial. Which mornings are busiest? What time do neighbors start coming through? When would having a neighborhood coffee shop open be most useful to you?

We don’t want to choose our future hours based only on what looks good on paper. Come tell us what you want by showing up.

Stop in before work, after school drop-off, between meetings, or whenever coffee fits into your morning. And while you’re here, tell us what hours you’d like to see BVB keep going forward.

I’m officially much happier on THIS side of the pitch competition. 😂

Yesterday was the third South Chicago Pitch Competition, and it was another reminder of why this event has become something I genuinely look forward to.

At the first competition, Bridge View Brew was one of the businesses pitching — and we were fortunate enough to win the top prize.

When the competition returned in June, BVB came back as a vendor, and I also moderated the Q&A panel.

This time, the organizers asked Bridge View Brew to provide the hospitality table. So instead of worrying about judges’ questions and pitch timing, I got to pour coffee, welcome people in and watch five other South Chicago entrepreneurs take the stage. ☕️

And somehow, I was still nervous for them. 😂

Some of these are businesses and entrepreneurs I already know, which made it even better to see them representing our neighborhood.

Congratulations to Sensei’s Tea House on winning this round, and congratulations to every business that competed.

I’m especially grateful to the P33 team and all of the partner organizations that have continued supporting BVB beyond our own competition and have worked to make these opportunities truly hyper-local.

There’s something powerful about watching South Chicago businesses grow alongside one another — competing one day, collaborating another day, and continuing to build a stronger neighborhood business community together.

I came across this feedback again this morning and it genuinely made me smile:

“Very nice staff!”

It was sent anonymously through Square after someone visited Bridge View Brew during our preview days on August 2.

We didn’t ask them to leave feedback. There’s no name or email attached, so I have no idea who sent it. But I wanted to publicly say thank you anyway.

As we move beyond the construction phase and continue building out our regular operations, there are so many things we’re working to standardize—from recipes and training to procedures and customer service.

This little note is a reminder of something I want to make sure we never standardize out of BVB: warmth.

Yes, we want to serve a great cup of coffee. But we also want people to feel welcomed, respected and glad they walked through the door.

So whoever sent this back in August, thank you. Your three words meant more than you probably realized.

And we’re carrying that energy forward. 🤎
