It's Judy with early word about tonight's "America at a Crossroads: 250" on the PBS News Hour, a trip to Ludlow, Vermont, to sit down with Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Joseph Ellis to discuss his latest book, The Great Contradiction: The Tragic Side of the American Founding.
In it, Ellis explores what he calls the two biggest failures made by the founders, whom he has celebrated in his previous works for the triumph of creating a nation built on the idea of freedom in a representative democracy. One was the failure to avoid Indian removal, but Ellis argues even more impactful on our values has been the failure to end slavery. We talked about why the founders chose not to, and how that decision has reverberated over two and a half centuries to what we have today: the ongoing debate over being a biracial, and now multiracial America.
We also stopped by The Country Girl Diner in nearby Chester, to speak with customers about their view of the founders and what it means to them to be an American in our 250th year.
I hope you'll watch the PBS News Hour tonight at 6 PM Eastern, but if you can't, you'll find this report - and all our previous reports - at any time on the "America at a Crossroads" home page on the News Hour's website, with transcripts: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/tag/america-at-a-crossroads
