A glimpse into Chester’s past ❤️
Pictured here is downtown Chester in the late 1800s, and if you look closely, the historic building on the left is the very same building that houses PH Steakhouse today.
At a time when horse-drawn carriages traveled through town and Main Street looked a little more like a country road, this building stood as one of Chester’s landmarks. Originally known as the Chester House, the building dates back to the early 1800s and served as an inn and gathering place for travelers making their way through the area. Imagine arriving in Chester by carriage and stopping right here, in the same building where guests gather for dinner today.
What makes this photo so incredible is how recognizable the building still is. Well over a century later, so much of its historic character remains. The shape of the building, the charm of the architecture, and the feeling of this corner of town are remarkably similar to what they were all those years ago. Chester has grown, but it has never lost the historic character that makes it feel so special.
That is part of the magic of visiting Chester. This is not just another downtown. It is a place where history still feels alive. You can spend the afternoon shopping locally owned boutiques, grabbing coffee, exploring the town, and ending the day with dinner inside a building that has been part of Chester’s story for generations.
Next time you pass PH Steakhouse, take a second look. You are not just walking past a restaurant. You are looking at a piece of Chester history that has stood the test of time ❤️
