CapĂ­tulo 6: Todo empezĂł en Battlefield

Before La Hacienda was a restaurant, it was a small tienda on Battlefield Boulevard with a rack of Bimbo, chiles, and products our community couldn’t easily find.

Then people began asking MarĂ­a for food. She made tacos, pozole, and tamales and their demand eventually gave our family the confidence to open a small taquerĂ­a.

Some of those first customers still sit at our tables today.

Capítulo 5: California Dreamin’ looked like hard work
Before La Hacienda, Raul worked his way through California picking strawberries and peaches, painting, gardening, and taking whatever work came next. Each job moved him one step closer to the life our family would eventually build in Virginia.
Those years still live inside La Hacienda in the way we work, the food we prepare, and the people we welcome around our tables.

Cynthia remembers growing up in Mexico as a place where everyone knew one another. Neighbors were familiar. Family was always nearby. And so many memories were made around food.
Coming to the United States meant beginning again in a place where neither she nor her parents knew anyone.
We can’t recreate the home our family left behind. But we can carry forward what home felt like.
At La Hacienda, that feeling has slowly taken shape through familiar faces, families returning to the same tables, employees growing alongside us, and customers who no longer feel like strangers.
Over time, this became more than the restaurant our family built. It became a place where we could feel at home again and invite others into that feeling.
To every familiar face that keeps returning here at our chesapeake locations: you helped make La Hacienda feel like home.
Jalisco gave us our roots while Los Angeles gave us our vision And the 757 gave us our home.

AquĂ­ mismo hacemos nuestra masa, siguiendo el mismo proceso que nuestra familia trajo desde Jalisco.

En nuestro local de Military Highway, tenemos a alguien dedicado especialmente a la masa, haciendo a mano cada tortilla, gordita, huarache y sope, como lo hemos hecho desde que abrimos en 2013.

Las tortillas se hacen frescas todos los dĂ­as y se sirven hasta las 3:00 p. m., o hasta que se acabe la masa.

Porque hay cosas que, para que salgan bien, se tienen que hacer con calma.

Masa literally means “dough” in Spanish. Made from maíz (corn) it is the foundation of many traditional Mexican dishes.

Our masa is made in-house through the careful, time-honored process our family brought with us from Jalisco.

At our Military Highway locations, every tortilla, gordita, huarache, and sope is shaped by hand by a dedicated masa specialist. We’ve done it this way since day one in 2013. Our handmade tortillas are served fresh until 3 p.m. or until the day’s masa runs out.

So here’s a little secret: come before 3, while the masa station is still going. You just might catch a little taste of Jalisco being made right here in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Chapter 3: Inheriting the Work

For Juan, growing up inside La Hacienda felt normal.

His father would leave the shipyards, still wearing his work clothes and boots, and change into an apron. His mother kept the restaurant running. Weekends that other kids spent with friends were spent helping the family.

Only as an adult did Juan understand what building this required not only from him, but from his parents, who gave much of their own lives to the work.

Now the responsibility belongs to the next generation: allow La Hacienda to evolve without losing the soul his parents sacrificed to give it.

People have crossed Hampton Roads to find us for years. With four locations across Chesapeake, we’d love to welcome you to our table. Come experience La Hacienda for yourself.
