We asked Chris Georgenes to paint a whale for the biggest art auction on Cape Cod this year; Chatham Chamber of Commerce & Merchants Association Art In The Park Auction. Chris chose Wampanoag folklore as my visual muse, specifically the legend of Granny Squannit, a small supernatural figure, her giant husband Maushup and woodland spirit figures known as Pukwudgies.

"Squannit can help or harm depending on how people treat the land, sea, and one another. Tales emphasize her control over tides, weather, fish, and small sea creatures; she may reward respectful behavior and punish greed, disrespect, or violations of custom. Squannit once cut her finger and a drop of her blood fell into the bog, thereby creating the Cranberry bogs. Her legendary arguments with her giant husband Maushup, caused storms at sea. Squannit also made herself sick to force the townsfolk to invent medicine and cure her, which then benefitted all.
Mashup is Squannit's husband, described as a giant who can eat whales and sharks whole. He dragged his toe across the mainland, thereby creating Cape Cod. Maushup dumped the ashes from his pipe into the ocean, creating the Cape Cod and Elizabeth Islands. He loved eating broiled whale; he would catch one, fling it against the Aquinnah Cliffs to kill it, and then broil it over an open fire. The blood from the whales stained the cliffs dark red and the cliffs remain that color to this day.
Pukwudgies are small mischievous woodland creatures that turned against humans; they can shape-shift and become invisible at will.
Wampanoag folklore is deeply rooted in the physical landscape of Cape Cod and the Elizabeth Islands.The stories emphasize the interconnectedness of all living things: keeping balance, and respect for the earth, including its land and seas."
