The Virginian Restaurant is lauded as “one of the South’s most famous eateries” in Coy Barefoot’s book, The Corner, a history of UVA’s commercial district. While we certainly agree, this Charlottesville landmark has been through a lot to get where it is today. From transforming into a soda fountain during Prohibition to temporarily “going under” during World War II, The Virginian has had quite an

eventful legacy since its grand opening in 1923. This well-loved restaurant is proud to be the oldest one in town – and to have been a staple of Corner culture for multiple generations of ‘Hoos!
