We’re excited to welcome Chef-Owner Kimmy Bazan of El Veneno Tacos to Community Matters Café on September 21 for Community Takeovers Vol. 03. 🌮🔥!

What started as a Charlotte pop-up has grown into an award-winning food truck known for bringing bold, creative takes on Mexican food to the Queen City: incorporating traditional recipes, flavors and techniques with Kimmy’s own perspective.

In 2025, Kimmy was named Food Truck of the Year by , but what we love most about her story is the heart behind the food.

For Kimmy, the kitchen has always been a place where people come together... a place for family, creativity and connection. And we think there’s something pretty special about getting to bring that philosophy into our kitchen for a day.

At Community Matters Café, food has always been about more than what’s on the plate, too. As a Life Skills Program of , our students have the opportunity to practice essential life skills — from communication and conflict resolution to accountability and maintaining a schedule, as they continue moving forward in their recovery journey.

On September 21, those two stories get to share a kitchen. ❤️

Graduates of Charlotte Rescue Mission's 120-day recovery program have the opportunity to transition back into the community through the Community Matters Cafe Life Skills Program. This 6-month extension initiative addresses topics such as conflict resolution, expressing concerns, and healthy ways to cope with conflict and stress all within both a classroom and restaurant setting. During this time, the program covers all housing and transportation expenses.

By coming to Community Matters Cafe, you are doing so much more than getting a cup of coffee and enjoying lunch. You are restoring hope in individuals who have lost their way in life because of their addiction. You are reinforcing all of the essential life skills our students are learning and showing them that they have a community that believes in their future.
