Is Gewürztraminer Riesling’s baby brother?

Ryan compares Riesling and Gewürztraminer at Wednesday’s wine tasting. Riesling tends to be brighter, sweeter, and higher in acid. Gewürztraminer has lower acidity, more weight, and what Ryan calls a few Chardonnay-like tendencies.

Prosecco and Champagne may both have bubbles, but they are not the same wine.

Prosecco comes from Italy and is usually lighter, brighter and a little more tropical. Champagne comes from the Champagne region of France and develops its bubbles inside the bottle, giving it more texture and those classic brioche notes.

Here is a little secret about buying wine.

For every famous label producing a great bottle, there may be a smaller producer nearby making a similar style without the same name recognition.

Blue Rock Estates and Silver Oak are neighbors, and both produce Cabernet with rich fruit and a smooth, silky finish. If you enjoy Silver Oak, Blue Rock may be a bottle worth discovering.

What really happens when wine ages?

A younger wine may taste brighter, fruitier and more direct. An older bottle can develop softer textures and deeper flavors you would never find when the wine was first released.

That does not automatically make the older wine better. It makes it different, and comparing the two is part of the fun.

Bollinger is one of the best-known names in Champagne, but it is not the only bottle worth opening.

Louis Dumont offers a beautiful blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with crisp apple, fine bubbles and a brioche finish. It is a great example of why it pays to look beyond the most recognizable labels.
