A VERY PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM OUR OWNER:
Yesterday changed me.
As a chef and restaurant owner, you prepare for almost every challenge imaginable. You train, you practice, you install safety systems, and you hope you'll never have to use them. Yesterday, I experienced the one thing every restaurant owner fears most, a fire in the kitchen at The Blue Heron.
Many of you have reached out after hearing what happened, and I cannot begin to express how much your calls, texts, messages, and prayers have meant to me. I wanted to share an update and, more importantly, my gratitude.
By the grace of God, I was the only person injured. Somehow, in the middle of the chaos, I was able to get everyone else out of the building, activate the fire suppression system, and shut off the gas at the tank. In those moments, instinct simply took over.
As I was shutting off the gas, a fireball suddenly erupted, striking me and throwing me backward across the kitchen. After the fire was extinguished and I knew everyone was safe, I was taken to the emergency room and then transferred to the VCU Burn Center. The doctors and nurses there were absolutely incredible. Thanks to their care—and some quick first aid before I left the restaurant (an old chef's trick involving mayonnaise that I've believed in for years)—my burns were limited to first-degree burns. They are painful, but I have been incredibly blessed to escape without permanent damage or scarring.
As I sit here today reflecting on everything that happened, I can't stop thinking about how differently this story could have ended.
I've been told that my injuries could have been much worse—possibly even fatal. I haven't watched the security footage, and I don't know if I ever will. I don't need to. I lived it. And that's enough.
This weekend I turn 51 years old.
Just a few days ago, I probably would have thought of my birthday as simply another candle on the cake and another year gone by. Today, I see it differently. After coming so close to tragedy, celebrating another birthday feels less like getting older and more like being given another year that I wasn't promised. That realization is both humbling and overwhelming.
Moments like these have a way of putting everything into perspective. They remind you that buildings can be repaired. Equipment can be replaced. Businesses can reopen. People cannot.
Yesterday reminded me that every day is a gift. Every conversation with a friend, every meal shared with a guest, every laugh with my staff, every hug from someone you love—none of it should ever be taken for granted. The Blue Heron is so much more than a restaurant to me. It is a place built on friendships, family, laughter, and community. Seeing the outpouring of support over the past 24 hours has reminded me that what we've built together is far bigger than four walls and a kitchen.
Over the next few days, we'll be working hard to deep clean the kitchen, recharge the fire suppression system, replace what needs replacing, and complete every required fire and health inspection. If all goes according to plan, we're hopeful to reopen by Friday—just in time for my 51st birthday weekend. I honestly can't imagine a better way to celebrate than getting back to doing what I love, surrounded by my incredible staff, loyal customers, friends, and this amazing community that has carried me through these last few days.
To my incredible staff, who immediately stepped up without hesitation… thank you.
To my family, friends, and this amazing community who have wrapped me in love, encouragement, and prayer… thank you.
And most of all, thank You, God. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that His hand was on me yesterday. I walked away with burns that will heal. That is nothing short of a miracle.
I have always believed that God still has work for me to do. Yesterday only strengthened that belief.
Thank you for every prayer, every message, every phone call, and every kind word. They have carried me through one of the most difficult days of my life.
We'll be back soon. Until then, hold the people you love a little tighter, never take a single day for granted, and don't let a single opportunity pass to tell the people in your life how much they mean to you.
I'll see you soon. ❤️
