Last week? Brutal.

Storms outside. Storms inside.

➡️ Key personnel dropped the ball.
➡️ A vendor mistake cost us dearly—and they disappeared when it mattered.
➡️ Money stolen.
➡️ 4 locations were closed due to flooding.
➡️ 2 sandwich units and 1 ice machine went down.
➡️ And yet, catering in multiple cities still had to happen—with excellence.
➡️ Smiles still had to be real, not rehearsed.

This is what leadership looks like in real time. Not in theory. Not in a book.
It’s doing the hard things when the weight of everything is on your shoulders.
It’s staying steady when everything around you shakes.

And through it all, I kept thinking of a few of my Unshaken values that built all of this:

💥 Fall. Rise. Repeat.
Because the world doesn’t pause for your struggle—but neither does your purpose.

💪 Grind Before Glory.
Because it’s not just about showing up—it’s about doing so with resolve, excellence, and joy, regardless.

The photo I’m sharing was taken in one of my stores—closed, dark, and quiet.
I paused there for just a moment, surrounded by silence, to re-anchor.
Sometimes, before you rise again, you need stillness.
Stillness to remember who you are. Why you started. And where you’re going.

To all those affected by Tropical Storm Chantal and the devastating flooding across our region—my heart and prayers are with you.
May you find strength in the shaking and rise again, grounded in resilience and hope.

So no—it wasn’t a feel-good week.
But I’m walking out of it with something deeper than relief.

I’m walking out of it Unshaken.

Some seasons of life demand grind. Others demand grace. The rare ones require both.

The young man in this picture had no idea what he was in for. When I first stepped into business ownership, I was working 91 hours a week. Lost $18,000 in the first year. Still had a family to lead, employees to pay, and a dream I couldn’t afford to quit on. There wasn’t time for pep talks—only purpose and perseverance.

That season didn’t break me. It built me. Quietly and without applause.

What I learned then has become a foundational belief I carry with me every day:

Grind before glory.
The reward means more when you’ve become the kind of person who can carry it.

I’ve come to believe that the greatest success stories aren’t just about what people build—but who they become in the process.

And if there’s one thing I’m convinced of—especially now—it’s that life doesn’t get easier. But you can get stronger. Clearer. More grounded.

You can Become Unshaken.

Hold on, you’re telling me I get to sit in a room with some of the best minds around to strategize about business opportunity, community strengthening, investing in the futures of our kiddos, AND get a behind the scenes tour at one of the nation’s greatest basketball programs?!? I could do this, ALL DAY! The Chamber for a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro

Super proud of this crew at one of my Chapel Hill locations for being one of the top sellers of Footlong Sidekicks in the U.S. If you haven’t tried them yet, what are you waiting for?!? Also, shoutout to Subway for the many pairs of the yummiest looking socks I’ve ever seen!

I continue to believe that catering success comes from relationship building and community service. Who’d have thought national recognition would come from a journey and business model that started in one tiny Subway, in one tiny, North Carolina town, more than a decade ago?
