This October will be the start of our 30th year at Chase’s Diner. By any measurement, it has exceeded every expectation I have ever had.
I have done the Sunday Trivia for over 25 of those years. If you are not familiar, I would post a trivia question and the first ten people to get the answer right won dinner and dessert. This all came about because people would come into the Diner and challenge me on music trivia. So finally, I decided to make it a game for everybody.
I always put a lot of time into it and tried to go to great lengths to make sure there can only be one correct answer. Often times I’d be spending several hours on Saturday to get the right question.
I wanted it to be fun for everybody while we gave away over $1000 a month as part of this promotion. Unfortunately, lately it’s gotten to be more of an inconvenience to our staff than anything. I won’t go into all the details, but we’ve had several issues over the years with people getting upset over the question. Upset to the point where they disrespect our team members. Arguing and cussing at them! Over a simple trivia question! And when somebody gets mad and emotional, it doesn’t matter how many facts you present to them.
Several months back I had a question that asked if you knew the only group that had a number one song on the pop charts before, during, and after The Beatles had their historic run from 1964-1970. The correct answer was Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. I had a customer cuss at me and be so disrespectful because he told me I was wrong and the answer is The Beach Boys. I actually love The Beach Boys and had met Brian Wilson three times. But if you look them up, you’ll find out why that answer wasn’t correct. The Beach Boys first billboard number one song was after The Beatles arrival.
My trivia question today was, “What non-coastal state is bordered by 70% water”. A customer got upset and started cussing because he said it was Michigan, which was not the answer I came up with after researching.

I guess his next part is gonna be my mistake. We could put it up for argument whether Michigan is considered a coastal state. The customer could probably make a good case that it’s not as it’s not on the coast of the Pacific, or the Atlantic, or the Gulf of Mexico. I grew up on the coast of Lake Erie. When I was saying coastal I included a Great Lakes. Obviously Michigan is on the coast of the Great Lakes. On my part, I should’ve been clearer with the question which I should know better after all these years. Having said that, this is just a game for $25 worth of food. I can not imagine getting so upset and swearing about it.
By the way, the answer I had was Kentucky, which is surrounded by three rivers, much of which defines it state line.
The bottom line is 25 years is a pretty amazing run for anything. I could take all these questions over the last 25 years and make a pretty cool trivia book, but after today’s incident and quite frankly, several other issues like this in the past, TODAY IS THE LAST TRIVIA QUESTION I POST AT THE DINER.

Jennifer and Jaime, our daughters do all the posting for social media for the Diner. They took me off of social media years ago, probably rightly so🤣 They do an outstanding job and I’m sure they’ll come up with a new way to do these type of promotions with our amazing guests.
To all those of you who played along with me and educated me on your own trivia questions over all these years, thank you so much. Like I said, 25 years is an amazing ride. And you’ll still find me on Sunday morning to have you challenge me with your latest question.
Thank you all for being part of our diner family.
Most respectfully,
Skip Chase
