Pepperoni Pizza ︱ Pizzeria Antica

With October being pizza month, I wanted a good pizza in this month’s list. For a sit-down pizza, I want pizza by Pizzeria Antica in Downtown Champaign. I ordered Antica’s pepperoni pizza ($21), a from-scratch pie with crust made using special flour from Naples, then topped with crushed San Marazano tomatoes, fresh basil, quality mozzarella, and cupped pepperoni. God, I love this kind of pepperoni so much, and the pizzamaker did not skimp at all on these porky discs. The tiny pepperoni cups had pools of greasy goodness and ridges crisped to nearly burnt but not quite. A 90-second bake in Antica’s wood-fired Italian oven cooked this Neapolitan pizza to charred excellence. It was outstanding: the crust, the cheese pull, the smattering of pepperoni, the hits of basil, all of it.

Try this particular pizza with those fine pepperoni cups cooked in a fancy-ass imported oven by a certified pizzaiolo — a fitting move this pizza month. Read more in my restaurant review from last summer, Stephanie’s review from 2022, and Remington’s interview with the owner.

Closed again on Tuesday due to the cold weather. We suggest wine with your leftover spaghetti. Oven will be hot and making pizza again on Wednesday, Hopefully? Restaurant Week starts this weekend!
