Who is “TK”? 🇺🇸

Great question!

In honor of his birthday, April 10th, we would like to introduce you to the namesake of “TK’s.”

Major Thomas E. Kennedy is our family’s American hero.

Born on Easter Sunday in 1977, “TK,” as his friends called him, was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 8, 2012. A West Point graduate and Army Ranger, Major Kennedy was a defensemen on the Black Knight ice hockey team and earned his Masters in organizational psychology at Columbia University. A decorated officer, he served in Iraq and Afghanistan earning two Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Award and a Purple Heart. 💜

By all accounts, Major Kennedy led his soldiers with integrity, compassion, wit, optimism, and loyal patriotism.

To us, he was John’s little brother; Kami’s husband; and Brody and Maggie’s dad. TK loved his family, his friends, ice hockey, golf, a cold Guinness, and the New York Yankees.

One of his soldiers had this to say about TK: “He was everything we wanted to be. Every one of us wanted to be just like him, or at least something close to his example. It wasn’t because he was the fastest or strongest or smartest. It was because he was the best of us. A leader who cared about every single person.”

Tell us about your family’s American Hero! We would love to hear it.

A sweet friend sent me this photo from the Cleveland family collection. It is the first time I’ve seen the building with the metal siding. I think it preserved the brick front we are able to see today. I love the faint image of the cow in the upper left corner of the building. Check it out the next time you drive by.

Does anyone know when the Cleveland’s bought the building from the Yeager’s and turned it into a grocery store? I can’t find the exact year. Comment below if you know!

I would love to see any other photos you may have - inside or out - of the building in its early years. Send a pic or share a story! We would love to hear it.

Fun fact: my uncles bagged groceries at Cleveland’s; and my mom worked in an office on the second floor when she was a senior at BCHS.

Thank you for all of the follows and notes of support! We really appreciate it! 😍 As promised, we want to share information and keep you updated on our journey.

The demolition inside has started! We are trying to save as much of the original ceiling as we can. Here is a peek inside of the entryway and main dining room.

Built in 1898, “The Cleveland Building” was originally the Yeager Hotel. A stagecoach inn (with guest rooms, a dining room, and saloon) that served customers traveling on the Montgomery to Tuscaloosa line.
