Hillsborough Castle, home of The King and Queen when visiting, the gardens were beautifully done, apples and pears were grown on rails. These kitchen gardens were first developed in the 1500’s. We loved strolling the grounds, the entire area, castle ( palace ) is protected by the National Trust, however no government monies are provided for the upkeep. Donations and memberships are what keeps it sustained.
We stopped in the cafe for a snack/ lunch, sausage rolls, Irish scone ( cherry) and chicken panini we delicious!
*Note* Irish scones are bigger, dense, hard ( browned) on the outside and tender on the inside, served with butter and jam.
We stayed in the Europa Hotel for the night, interesting note, it was the most bombed out hotel during the “troubles” due to most journalists stayed there covering the news, it was attacked 30 times and rebuilt!
The Titanic museum was very different from what we expected. It’s about the building of the ship, the people that built it and the designers etc. The inormaitity of the project was unbelievable! The museum itself is as tall as the ship was, it is located exactly where the work was done, Harlan and Wolfe shipyard. We were delighted to see the violin that Wallace Hartley played as the ship went down.
That evening we dined at one of the oldest establishments in Belfast, The Crown, it is located on Victoria Street.
Dinner was delicious! I indulged in a chicken leek pie, it was served with champ and roasted carrots. Champ is mashed potatoes with spring onions ( sautéed) and Irish butter mixed in. Phil chose an ocean platter that included scallops and fried fish ( Hake) mussy peas and French fries.
A busy day , followed by welcome sleep 🛌!
Posting surprises tomorrow!
