Blake’s Yearbook Pt 3️⃣

We were just 24 when we bought Blake’s from Greg in 2014, and truly had no idea what running a restaurant would entail. Those pre-Covid years were filled with so many sweet birthday parties, team celebrations, family gatherings and shared holiday traditions.

But the learning curve was incredibly steep, and owning a business becomes your life in a way I know neither of us anticipated. When I think about how lucky we were to be surrounded by the people who comprised our first crews, I get emotional. We could not have managed the last 12 years without the sweat equity and love that they put into Blake’s and into us in those first years.

Some of them were Blake’s alum who stuck with us or circled back around to pitch in, and some of them were just kids at the time who grew up along side us and became our lifelong family/friends. Sarah was truly the best original hire we could have hoped for. Regardless how they ended up on our team— they all filled our long work days with silliness, support, friendship, and the true meaning of teamwork.

Blake’s Yearbook, Pt. ✌️

As stated in many of the newspaper interviews Greg gave over the years, his goal for Blake’s beyond serving great food was to make a place for young people and their friends to hang out when they weren’t at school or home. He was extraordinary at making young people feel seen and valued, while teaching them the job skills and life skills they’d need to move on into the world. A first job for many, Blake’s has always been a third space for anyone who needed or wanted one.

Teanna and I have carried these values into our ownership and strive to be the best cheerleaders and role models we can be for the young people who we get the opportunity to work with here.

When Blake’s opened its doors, it was a 50s-themed pizza parlor that capitalized on sock hop vibes. Greg loved vintage cars, James Dean & Marilyn Monroe portraits, and never turned down an opportunity to sing Elvis or The Big Bopper at the top of his lungs (not always well- iykyk.)

By the time T and I were hired in the early 2000s, the store was more of a mishmash of retro and 90s vibes with a bent toward decor-by-high schoolers (there was, for a time, an “art” display made of cooked pizza dough nailed to the wall above the prep counter.) As a 16 year old it delighted me. He let us draw all the signs, bought us disposable cameras to document our coworkers and favorite customers, let us decorate for holidays even when it was a pain in the butt for him to clean up later.

Over time, the poster board collages of crews that came before ours were transformed into permanent photo displays. He hung Blake’s-sponsored soccer and little league team photos beside them with pride. Little by little the 50s nostalgia shifted to Carnation community nostalgia, and Blake’s became a kind of living, growing yearbook for the folks who have passed through its doors.

Well, the rumors you may have heard are true. After 39 years in operation, 12 with Teanna & I at the helm, Blake’s will close its doors for business on September 30th, 2026. This restaurant is, and has been, so much more than just a family pizza parlor. It is a community place, a touchstone, and a home away from home for so, so many people.

Teanna and I have spent the majority of the last 20 years of our lives behind these counters— we literally and figuratively grew up here— and the decision to shift our focus to our families at home did not come lightly. We know that many of you might like to see Blake’s live on forever, but the legacy Greg built feels incredibly personal to us and like it is our responsibility to protect it. The heart of what makes our restaurant special is the people who work here, the folks who greet you warmly and come to know you, and who have carried the torch for what small town means all of these years. The vast majority of our customers are people we see regularly, who we have made long lasting and wonderful relationships with. We know you will grieve this loss, and we will too. There is no bottom to the depth of gratitude we feel for the people who have loved and supported us along the way; most especially our staff and our families, and of course Greg himself.

Now, we’re asking you to help us make our last month in operation here the best one ever! Help us celebrate 39 amazing years of hard work, community building, celebrations, pinball playing, and coming together for pizza. Please stop by, share your memories, have a slice and reminisce about the good times we’ve all shared here. There’s always a new chapter ahead 🩷
