DRIVERS URGED TO USE CAUTION AROUND FARM EQUIPMENT DURING HARVEST
ILLINOIS RECORDED 276 CRASHES INVOLVING FARM TRACTORS OR EQUIPMENT IN 2025
The Illinois State Police and Illinois Farm Bureau are reminding Lawrence County motorists and farmers to make roadway safety a priority during the fall harvest season.
Agriculture is one of the leading industries in southeastern Illinois, and large farm equipment will be traveling between fields throughout the coming months.
Drivers should remain alert for slow-moving combines, tractors and other agricultural equipment on rural roads and highways.
Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed, allow additional travel time and be prepared for farm equipment to make sudden or wide turns. Drivers should also avoid passing until they have a clear view of the roadway and can safely complete the maneuver.
Farmers are encouraged to make sure their equipment is properly marked and visible before entering public roadways.
Illinois Department of Transportation crash statistics indicate that 276 crashes involving farm tractors or other agricultural equipment occurred statewide during 2025.
Officials say patience, reduced speeds and increased awareness from both motorists and equipment operators can help make the harvest season safer for everyone.
