Chicken Spiedies 👀

Herb-marinated chicken, balsamic quinoa salad, and turmeric-roasted cauliflower.

Bright, savory, a little tangy, and the kind of meal that makes eating well feel way less depressing than another container of plain chicken and broccoli.

Freshly made. Ready when you are. 💪

Eat more fiber for a “healthier gut microbiome.”

Okay…but what does that actually mean? 👀

Because “gut health” gets thrown around like it’s one single measurable thing.

It’s not.

In the study we’re talking about here, increasing fiber didn’t significantly increase overall microbial diversity.

But that doesn’t mean nothing happened.

Researchers found changes in the functional capacity of the microbiome instead.

And THAT distinction matters.

A microbiome doesn’t necessarily have to contain more different kinds of bacteria for the bacteria already living there to respond differently to what you’re feeding them.

Which brings us back to something we’ve been talking about all week:

Fiber isn’t one thing.

Different fibers have different properties.

Different bacteria can use different substrates.

And changing what you eat can influence what those microbes are doing.

So is “eat more fiber for your gut” completely wrong?

No.

It’s just a hell of a lot more complicated than:

MORE FIBER = MORE GOOD BACTERIA. 😂

Nutrition science rarely gives us conclusions that clean.

And personally?

I think that’s what makes it interesting. 🤓

Fiber is fiber, right?

Not exactly. 👀

Two foods can both contain 5 grams of fiber and still have very different effects in your body.

That’s because “fiber” is actually a pretty broad category.

Some fibers are more viscous, meaning they form a gel like substance in your gut.

Psyllium is a good example, and that property is part of why it can help with things like LDL cholesterol, blood sugar response, and stool consistency.

Other fibers are more easily fermented by your gut bacteria. Inulin is one example.

These fibers can help feed certain bacteria in your gut, but they may also produce more gas and bloating in some people.

And plenty of foods contain a MIX of different fibers with different properties.

So when you hear:
“Eat more fiber.”

That’s not bad advice.
It’s just incomplete.

Because the amount of fiber matters, but the TYPE and SOURCE matter too.

Which is exactly why eating a variety of fiber rich foods beats obsessing over one magic fiber number. 👏

Fiber: because apparently “it helps you poop” is the extent of the education most of us got. 😂
And yes, fiber absolutely plays a role in bowel regularity.
But that is ONE of its jobs.
Depending on the type, fiber can also support LDL cholesterol, influence your blood sugar response after eating, contribute to fullness, and provide fuel for bacteria living in your gut.
And here’s where it gets more interesting:
Not all fiber does the same thing.
Different fibers behave differently depending on things like how they hold water, whether they form a gel, and how easily they’re fermented by gut bacteria.
Which means 5 grams of fiber from one source isn’t necessarily doing exactly the same thing as 5 grams from another.
Do you need to start analyzing the viscosity and fermentability of every vegetable you eat?
Absolutely freakin’ not. 😂
For most people, the bigger win is eating a variety of fiber-rich foods regularly:
🫘 Beans and lentils
🍓 Fruits
🥦 Vegetables
🌾 Whole grains
🥜 Nuts and seeds
And if you currently eat approximately three grams of fiber and say a prayer every day, maybe don’t jump straight to 35 overnight. Your digestive system would appreciate a little warning. 😂
Fiber is a category, not one ingredient with one job.
And this week, we’re getting into what those different jobs actually are. 👀

“Eat less saturated fat.”

Okay… and eat WHAT instead?

Because that second part matters.

When researchers look at saturated fat and cardiovascular health, we can’t just think about removing one nutrient in isolation.

Those calories get replaced by something.

And the evidence suggests the outcome can depend on what that something is.

One of the more consistently supported swaps?

Replacing some saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat.

Think less:
🧈 Butter
🥩 Higher-fat meats

And more:
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🐟 Fatty fish
🌻 Oils rich in unsaturated fats

That does NOT mean saturated fat is poison.

It doesn’t mean you need to ban butter from your kitchen.

And it definitely doesn’t mean every food containing saturated fat is automatically “bad.”

It means nutrition advice needs context.

“Eat less saturated fat” only tells you what to remove.

The better question is:
What are you replacing it with?

Because sometimes the part we leave out of the nutrition advice is the part that actually helps you use it.
