😂 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM YOUR FARMER:

Organic vegetables do not have a beauty standard.

Sometimes your cucumber is going to have a little ✨personality.✨
Sometimes your tomato looks like it has seen some things. 😂

And if one of these beautifully weird little guys ends up in your Farm to Home basket, just know:

Your farmer could have thrown it away. We didn’t.

Because perfectly good local food does NOT belong in the trash just because Mother Nature got a little creative with the shape.

It grew funny.
It tastes normal.
We’re eating it. 😂

So please enjoy your occasionally inappropriate cucumber, your lumpy tomato, your two-legged carrot, and whatever other nonsense the garden decides to produce.

Around here, we eat the weird ones too. 🌱😂

And yes… we promise it tastes exactly the same.

👇 Show me the WEIRDEST vegetable you’ve ever grown. Bonus points for photographic evidence.

🥕 QUICK QUESTION: HOW FAR AWAY CAN FOOD BE GROWN BEFORE YOU STOP CALLING IT “LOCAL”? 😂

Seriously.

10 miles?

25 miles?

50 miles?

Anywhere in Michigan?

“Locally grown” is one of those phrases we see EVERYWHERE now…

But what does it actually mean to you?

For us, local food isn’t about drawing some magical little circle on a map.

It’s about shortening the distance between the person growing your food and the person eating it.

It’s knowing where your food came from.

Knowing the farmer who grew it.

Keeping more food dollars in our communities.

Supporting small farms close enough that they’re actually part of the communities they’re feeding.

And building a food system where we aren’t completely dependent on food traveling hundreds or thousands of miles before it reaches our plates.

That’s what we’re trying to build with Farm to Home. 🌱

Farmers growing food.

Families needing food.

And somebody helping connect the two. ❤️

But now I’m REALLY curious because I have a feeling we’re going to get wildly different answers:

👇 When YOU see “LOCALLY GROWN,” how many miles away do you think that should mean?

🌱 EVERY TIME YOU BUY FOOD, YOU’RE VOTING FOR THE FOOD SYSTEM YOU WANT.And before anybody thinks I’m about to tell you th...

🌱 EVERY TIME YOU BUY FOOD, YOU’RE VOTING FOR THE FOOD SYSTEM YOU WANT.

And before anybody thinks I’m about to tell you that you need to buy 100% of your groceries from local farmers…

I’m not. 😂

That’s not realistic for most families.

But what if we all bought just ONE more thing locally?

🥚 Get your eggs from somebody down the road.

🌽 Stop at that little roadside stand you’ve driven past 47 times.

🍞 Buy a loaf of bread from the baker at the farmers market.

🥕 Grab your vegetables from a local farmer while they’re in season.

🌻 Pick up flowers grown right here instead of ones shipped halfway across the world.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Just become a little more local than you were yesterday. ❤️

Because every one of those purchases matters.

It helps a farmer buy next year’s seeds.

It helps a baker buy another bag of flour.

It helps a small business pay a bill.

And it keeps more of our food dollars circulating right here in our own communities.

That’s really the entire reason Farm to Home exists.

We want to make locally grown and produced food easier for regular families to actually get.

No perfection required.

Just people choosing their neighbors a little more often. 🌱❤️

What’s ONE thing you already try to buy locally?

👀 REED CITY… WE HAVE NEWS COMING TODAY!

Remember our classes at the beginning of market season?

They’re coming BACK. 🌱

And this time we’re talking about some of the things you’ve been asking us to teach:

🌻 Saving seeds
❄️ Growing food through the winter
🌱 Planning next year’s garden
🫘 And maybe even a good old-fashioned seed swap!

We’ll be announcing the new class lineup, dates and details LATER TODAY.

These classes are about making gardening and growing your own food accessible to EVERYONE — whether you’ve been gardening for 30 years or you’re starting with your very first seed.

And just like we talked about, we’re working to keep them pay-what-you-can/donation based so cost doesn’t have to keep someone home.

WHO’S READY FOR MORE CLASSES?! 🙋‍♀️🌱

Tag your gardening buddy so they don’t miss the announcement!

🌸 FREE FLOWERS FOR KIDS TONIGHT! 🌸

This might just be my favorite night of the entire market season.

We’re filling HUGE tables with flowers and letting the kids take over. 💐

They get to choose their own vase, pick out the blooms they love, and have a farmer there to help them turn it all into their very own bouquet.

And let me tell you… they are SO proud of themselves. 🥹

But my favorite part comes afterward.

Watching those little faces light up when they hand their flowers to Mom, Grandma, an auntie, or someone else they love.

And then watching the adults light up right back. ❤️

Every year we get questions like, “How can we dry these?” or “How can we keep these forever?”

And THAT is why this night is so special.

To us, it’s a table full of flowers.

To a mama, it might be the bouquet she keeps tucked away for the next 20 years because those tiny hands made it just for her.

😭😭😭

🌱 IF YOU’RE GOING TO EAT LOCAL… THIS IS THE MONTH TO DO IT. ❤️

September is here, and our Northern Michigan farmers are right in the middle of one of the most abundant parts of the entire growing season.

This is when the tables get heavy. 😂

Peppers. 🌶️
Sweet corn. 🌽
Cucumbers. 🥒
Onions. 🧅
Potatoes. 🥔
Greens, herbs, flowers and SO much more.

Some of it gets eaten this week.

Some of it gets canned, frozen, dried or tucked away for winter.

And every single time you choose something grown locally, you’re helping make sure there are still farmers here growing food for our community next year. ❤️

So here’s my challenge for September:

Buy ONE more thing locally than you normally would.
Heck… buy ALL local produce!

Find a roadside stand.

Visit a farmers market.

Buy directly from a farm.

Ask your neighbor who’s drowning in vegetables if they’re selling any. 😂

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Just move one more thing on your grocery list from the supermarket to somebody growing food near you.

Small choices add up to stronger farms and a stronger local food system. 🌱❤️

What food are you buying locally this week?

🌱 WHAT’S ONE FOOD YOU REFUSE TO BUY FROM THE GROCERY STORE THIS TIME OF YEAR?

I’ll go first…

Tomatoes. 🍅😂

Once you’ve eaten a tomato that was picked ripe from a Michigan garden, that grocery-store tomato just doesn’t hit the same.

This is the part of the year when local food is EVERYWHERE.

Tomatoes. Peppers. Cucumbers. Sweet corn. Herbs. Zucchini. Fresh eggs. Flowers.

And every time you choose something grown nearby, you’re helping keep another little piece of our local food system alive. ❤️

So I’m curious:

What’s the ONE thing you absolutely prefer to buy from a farmer or grow yourself?

Tell us below! 👇

🍅 THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO BUY MORE THAN YOU CAN EAT THIS WEEK. 😂

Seriously.

This is one of the BEST times of the year to buy local food in Michigan.

Tomatoes are rolling in. Peppers are everywhere. Cucumbers, onions, herbs, zucchini… our farmers are harvesting like crazy right now.

And here’s your yearly reminder:

You don’t have to be a master canner to put local food away for winter.

Chop those peppers and freeze them.

Freeze tomatoes whole and deal with them later. 😂

Make a batch of salsa.

Dry some herbs.

Shred and freeze that zucchini.

Buy an extra bag from your farmer while everything is abundant and IN SEASON.

February-you will be ridiculously happy when you pull a bag of Michigan-grown peppers out of the freezer. ❤️🌱

What are you preserving right now?

Tell us in the comments — and if you’re drowning in something from your garden, tell us that too. 😂
