The seafood market at Diamond Shoals offers a variety of locally caught seafood, including fresh shrimp and scallops, oysters, clams, blue crabs, tuna, flounder, mahi mahi, homemade crabcakes, and seasonal offerings dependent on what our local Outer Banks fishermen bring in. We have all the seasonings, spices and marinades you'll need, from classic Old Bay to Asian inspired flavors, and you can select and pick your own herbs from the herb garden in front of the seafood market. You can also purchase side dishes, kids meals, seafood salads, award winning soups, and appetizers to make a complete Hatteras Island seafood feast meal at home. Our knowledgeable staff is always on hand to answer questions and provide cooking tips, and we can even prepare any of your fish selections for you, just how you'd like: steamed, fried, grilled, broiled, blackened. On this day in 2003, Hurricane Isabel didn't just damage the North Carolina coast, it physically reshaped it. The storm surge cut clean through a stretch of Hatteras Island near Hatteras village, carving out a 2,000-foot-wide, 15-foot-deep breach that locals nicknamed Isabel Inlet almost overnight. 🌊

The break split the town of Hatteras off from the rest of the island for about two months. The Army Corps of Engineers began dredging operations on October 17, pumping sand from the nearby ferry channel to fill the gap, and it took nearly two months of work before NCDOT could rebuild Highway 12 across it.

Isabel is remembered today as one of the clearest examples of how a single storm can permanently alter a barrier island's shape, not just its buildings. Twenty-three years later, the same stretch of coastline is still dealing with erosion, just at a slower, quieter pace than one storm's worth of damage.

Sometimes a hurricane's legacy isn't the wind speed or the death toll. It's the new shoreline it leaves behind for everyone who comes after.
