Goose Day in Pennsylvania traces its local origins back to 1786 in the Juniata River Valley, rooted in the ancient European tradition of Michaelmas.A Pennsylvania Dutchman named Andrew Pontius hired a young Englishman named Archibald Hunter (who had jumped ship in Philadelphia). Their agreement stated that accounts would be settled annually on September 29th (St. Michaelmas Day). When settlement day arrived, Hunter showed up at Pontius's door with his accounts and a goose under his arm, explaining the English custom.The Legend: Goose as a symbol of wealth, prosperity, and good luck!!
