Unless you happen to know a Lao chef, the chances of trying any Lao cuisine in WNY would be slim to none. For those unfamiliar, in the context of world cuisine, Lao’s would be punk rock, making neighboring Thailand/Vietnam’s food seem anemic in comparison. The flavors are pushed to extremes accentuating spicy chilis, and umami-rich fish sauce, with the bright flavors of Southeast Asia. Yet, these strong flavors are what keep bringing you back. They become quite addictive.

Luckily, our Chef , happens to be of Lao origin, and wants to share his delectable Lao dishes with you. Next MONDAY, June 1 from 5-830 pm, he will be doing a pop-up featuring cult favorites like spicy papaya salad, Lao fried chicken with sticky rice, and the completely comforting nam khao (where fried rice meets an arancino with SE Asian flavors). This is a rare chance to see the multi-facets of Chef Vic, and experience some punk rock cuisine. We hope to see you there.

Grab your table, order at the bar and enjoy Lao Food!
(We have regular pop-up Japanese menu too😘).

For Setsubun this year Kuni’s is offering a special sushi roll, ehomaki, and a limited edition sake. Come join us to celebrate one of Japan’s largest holidays.
*Vegetarian Roll option available.

Setsubun (節分) is a traditional Japanese holiday that takes place on the last day of winter and the day before the beginning of spring.
This year, it’s on February 3rd, Tuesday.

This holiday marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, and it has been celebrated for centuries with a variety of customs and rituals.

The main tradition during Setsubun is mamemaki 豆撒き (bean throwing), which consists of throwing fukumame 福豆 (fortune beans) either out the front door or at someone wearing an oni 鬼 (demon) mask while shouting “Oni wa soto! 鬼は外! Fuku wa uchi! 福は内!” (Devils out! Fortune in!).

As part of bringing luck in, it is customary to eat roasted soybeans, one for each year of one’s life, plus one more for bringing good luck for the year.
Another tradition is eating uncut makizushirolls known as ehōmaki 恵方巻き (lucky direction rolls) in silence while facing the year’s lucky compass direction. It is believed that eating a special sushi roll while facing a specific lucky direction can bring good fortune. This year, the direction is south- southeast . The ehōmaki should be eaten in silence while facing the lucky direction, without speaking or cutting the roll.

Setsubun is a time of joy and celebration and a perfect opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Whether you participate in mamemaki, ehōmaki, or simply enjoy a special meal with your loved ones, this holiday is sure to be a memorable one. So join us in welcoming Spring!

Tonjiru (豚汁) is a love letter written in steam. A gentle warmth, the kind that creeps up on you like a day like today in Buffalo. When the world finally slows down. The broth is earthy, carrying the deep, comforting sigh of miso that feels like comfort. Thin slices of pork soften as they simmer, giving themselves completely to the soup, rich and generous, never rushed and now available to you this weekend. We’ll see you at 5😌
