Watching Ron Howard on a morning talk show made me think about how talent is not always obvious. Thinking about how the audition process unfolds for directors and producers. How could we know a child actor playing the part of Opie Taylor had that yet untapped talent to direct the likes of Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, Parenthood, Backdraft etc
As a director I encourage open auditions. Go to auditions, even if you don’t feel you are suited for a role or not. That’s the directors job. Just make sure you come in prepared. I have in my time cast people in roles that literally every other person in the room has disagreed with me. I learned early on to trust my instincts. I have made a mistake or two, but very few compared to the amount of people I have placed in the last 30+ years. I know a lot of companies audition by appointment. I do not. I want the actors milling around interacting with each other before they are called in to read. I like actors to remain available during the process to read against each other when I get the “feels”. There is something so exciting about an auditioner that can make me change my mind about a character. So be brave, be prepared…..if it was meant to be…it will be. (para phrasing Mama Rose from Gypsy).

I have been wanting to bring “Tokens of Affection” by Topher Payne to the Buffalo area stages for a long time now. I submitted the play to East Aurora Players a few weeks ago and they now have given me a director’s meeting date mid September. If it gets a green light it would be for the ‘26 - ‘27 season.

A word about the directors and producers. Andrew and Chris.
They were very patient, (it took me only one take to realize I shouldn’t move until the director says action 🤣) very kind, very knowledgeable. They kept us fed and hydrated. But most of all, Andrew was very receptive to creative input.

The real star of the film was the polar bear mascot showing up! Everybody wanted to grab a photo with her. I was lucky to sneak in for a fast one. That’s we with me with my knock off chucks.

Mira, in red was 1st AD (in my theater world I would’ve called her the stage manager) was absolutely amazing. A tiny little thing with a massive voice to make sure we all shut up during filming. “Quiet on the set” was the same as “quiet in the wings”!

The project name is 9021OLD (Senior Year) the part I was assigned was “Ethel”, who doesn’t say much but does a lot of walking around on a walker. Since I had taken a fall on the first day of shooting (my dog tripped me while I was dropping her off) and hurt my foot, I was really glad to have something to lean on most of the time. The production team was always around with a chair for me to sit on and a cold water bottle. These young people were the absolute best! in the last scene I even had a last-minute stunt double.
