Many people see me in the restaurant much of the time and assume that this is where I spend my days. While some weeks, or months, they aren’t wrong, I also have a full life outside the restaurant. First is always family - being a husband to my wife Erin and dad to my two girls (18 and 2). Second, I volunteer with a local charity called OnRamp and have since the beginning. My dear friend Blake Jennings started this non-profit as a way to give back while using his love for cars. We were long-time friends through our shared passion for Miata’s and I was just a sounding board for him as he began the search for cars to give away. I soon became the main car buyer for the charity traveling around to pick up cars. Soon OnRamp grew and i just took over the selling role. I later joined the board and add my time to whatever vehicle or people needs there are locally. So far, we have given almost 300 cars away to families in need of reliable transportation. So if you don’t see me at the restaurant, you can usually count on me doing something with cars or with my girls (or both). I’m thankful for the business and the employees that allow me to step away and I’m thankful for the energy that lets me keep moving both in and out of the restaurant

‘This place is the reason for the revitalization of downtown’ a customer told me last week. While there is no way I’ll ever make a claim that big, it still feels good to hear and know that people think that. I had been to downtown Bryan exactly once during my college career so obviously it wasn’t on my list of places to look at while I was shopping for a spot to open Caffe’ Capri. When a friend told me of an old brewery that had just shut down - that’s when I came to tour my space. Things it had going for it was that it had already been a restaurant and it was, relatively speaking, cheap. The lack of street lights at night, hardly any through traffic and the generall idea that downtown was ‘scary’ didn’t deter me that much (remember I was 22 and naive). I advertised everywhere there was to advertise in my first few years. Radio. Tv. Coupons. Every little publication that was available. The money I saved in rent I spent on ads. People started coming downtown. I had evening business that I had not thought would ever happen. And slowly, downtown started to get cleaned up and rebuilt. When they paved the streets to remove all the potholes, that was one of the toughest times I ever experienced in business as the streets were basically dirt for 9 months and wherever the bulldozers were at 5 pm, thafs where they would stay. It was like the opening scene of the Flintstones cartoon. And our entryway was a sheet of plywood. Downtown has come a long way since 1995. It is now a destination spot. And to think that I had a small part of that process makes me happy and proud

‘It’s better to have a small restaurant full than a big restaurant empty.’ That’s what my mom told me when I was looking around for where to open Caffe’ Capri. And that quote rings true each and every day for me in the past almost 31 years. Restaurants have an energy. The sounds, the smells, the decor, the lighting - all has to blend together in order to have a positive feel. We have just 14 tables - that’s all. Less than 60 people at any given time and we are full to the brim. With that, half of a restaurant also feels busy. No one wants to be the only table in a restaurant. We all want a place that is hopping, feels good and is upbeat. With my small space, we can offer than both during our normal weekdays and our weekends when there is a line out the door waiting for a seat. We are loud, energetic and our staff is happy - and customers can feel that. Originally, I wanted the old Luby’s in College Station on Texas Avenue. That place was huge. Downtown was not yet revitalized and it was far (10 minutes). Looking back now at my decision, I don’t think Caffe’ Capri would have been the same if I had started anywhere else. Come see us. Be one of the first 14 tables and you won’t have to wait. But if you do, it’s worth it
