We asked Owner–Executive Chef Cara Stadler what is behind the names of BaoBao Dumpling House and Tao Yuan:
BaoBao translates to “wrapped treasure.” Bao refers to the folding of dumpling skins. BaoBao Dumpling House was inspired by a childhood of sitting around the kitchen table bao’ing dumplings; as well as the many jiaozi guans (dumpling houses) we frequented in China.
Tao Yuan was suggested by my grandfather, who was born and raised in China and writes beautiful Chinese poetry. Tao means “peach” in Chinese, and Tao Yuan is a shortened name for peach blossom spring.
There is a famous Chinese fable about a fisherman who stumbles into a forest of blossoming peach trees and discovers an ethereal utopia. As a result of this fable, Tao Yuan or Tao Hua Yuan has also come to mean an unexpectedly fantastic place off the beaten path, or utopia.
