The thoughts this week come from a lecture later published as "Existentialism is a Humanism", by Jean-Paul Sartre, who said this: "You are what you do." In a song called "Dominant Species", Immortal Technique expresses similar thoughts, and pushes them one step further. According to him, you are what you build.
Whether or not you buy all that, imagine for a minute that you do. Play pretend and find out what it would feel like to have a clean slate. If you've ever been yoked with a definition, lay your burden down. Now look around, smell the air, hear the sounds. Your slate is clean, and your world is full.
You have a body that's made to take it all in, and then to spit out something brand new. If you're looking for help making something beautiful, or if you just want to surround yourself with beauty for a few minutes, stop in to Makers and we can help with that.
Are these things supposed to be timely? Just in case, let me end with this: there is one definition you can't shed.
You're a mortal person.
Your days are numbered, and so are your chances to create.
If we're sticking with the theory that our creative acts create us, then we only have so many chances to become someone we can be proud to be.
