It’s Memorabilia Monday!!

Some pieces are more than decorations. They are pieces of history, and this one is especially dear to us.

This original oil painting was created around 1963 by Bud Anderson of Beardstown, who captured the scene live while painting from an easel set up in the back of his truck as the men ran their fishing nets.

The young man on the right is Virgil Hamm, about 16 years old at the time. The man on the left is “Little Bill” Hollenback and the older man in back is Bill Anderson.

Virgil is one of Browning’s own, a name well known up and down the Illinois River. A true legend among commercial fishermen.

What makes this painting even more special is that it hung in the original River’s Edge for many years, in the very same spot where it hangs today!

We’re so appreciative of the Hamm family for letting us display this special painting. It’s quite the conversation piece, with folks remembering it hanging here years ago, trying to name the fishermen, and sharing stories of the good old days on the river.

We continue to meet more amazing new people every week! We hope you all enjoy your time and experience at the Edge! It also means so much to our River’s Edge Team to serve our regulars and many friends that return time and time again!

The friendships established, the memories being made, and seeing so many people from different areas coming down to the river to celebrate a special occasion or to simply take a break from this busy world we live in, is what makes this place so special.
