OUR HISTORY. OUR HERITAGE. OUR RESPONSIBILITY.

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on something far more important than a month of celebration: the importance of knowing who we are, where we come from, and whose shoulders we stand on.

Throughout this month, we celebrated remarkable people who helped shape our Puerto Rican heritage. Artists, musicians, writers, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, athletes, and visionaries. Some became household names. Others made extraordinary contributions without ever receiving the recognition they deserved.

But they all left something behind.

A legacy. A lesson. A door opened for someone who would come after them.

One of the things that struck me most during this journey was realizing how many of our younger generations may be growing up without knowing these stories. They recognize today's celebrities and influencers, but may never have heard of the pioneers who broke barriers, challenged injustice, preserved our traditions, and helped shape the world we live in.

And that should matter to all of us.

Because our history isn't simply a collection of names, dates, and events in a textbook. It is the foundation of our identity. It lives in our music, our food, our language, our neighborhoods, our traditions, and the opportunities we sometimes take for granted.

The freedoms we enjoy, the doors we walk through, and the dreams we dare to pursue were often made possible by people who came before us.

We owe it to them and to those who will come after us to keep their stories alive.

So as this month ends, I want to encourage everyone, especially our younger generations, to get curious.

Ask your parents and grandparents about their lives. Learn about the people who shaped your community. Discover the artists whose work influenced generations, the thinkers who challenged convention, and the ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things.

And don't stop at the familiar names. Some of the most inspiring stories are the ones we were never taught.

Our heritage is not limited to the past. It is something we carry forward, something we build upon, and something we have a responsibility to pass on.

This month reminded me that celebrating our culture is important. But understanding it is even more powerful.

Because when we know the stories of those who came before us, we gain a deeper understanding of what is possible for those who come next.

Heritage Month may be ending. Our responsibility to remember, honor, and educate should never end.

To everyone who followed along on this journey through our history, thank you.

And to the next generation: Know your roots. Learn their stories. Honor their struggles. Build on their accomplishments. Then go out and write a chapter of your own worth remembering.

¡Que viva nuestra historia! ¡Que viva nuestra cultura! ¡Que viva Puerto Rico! 🇵🇷❤️

For the past month, we've told the stories of the Puerto Ricans who built something bigger than themselves — the poets, the ballplayers, the scientists, the musicians, the cooks who wrote down our grandmothers' recipes so they'd never be lost. Swipe through a few of the faces who made this month so special to share.

Thank you for reading, sharing, and telling us about the legends in your own family. Their stories shaped our past. Knowing them shapes our future. 🇵🇷

Bernie Williams grew up in San Juan, came to New York, and became the quiet heart of four Yankees World Series championships in center field. When he retired, he didn't slow down — he picked up his guitar and earned a Grammy nomination for his jazz record. Some people get one great career. He got two.

From Santurce to fashion director of Esquire magazine, Nono Maldonado dressed and defined American style for decades — then came home to open his own atelier, proving Puerto Rican elegance was never something you had to leave the island to find.

Teodoro Moscoso looked at a Puerto Rico locked out of its own economy and spent a career building the doors in — founding the island's industrial development program and convincing the world there was no reason not to invest in Puerto Rican hands. Decades later, that blueprint is still being studied. Building something that lasts always starts with believing your people are worth the investment.

La Lupe arrived in New York from Cuba with a voice that refused to be polite — she screamed, she wept, she testified, right there on stage at the Palladium alongside Puerto Rico's biggest salsa stars. She helped build the sound of Nuyorican nightlife from the ground up. Passion isn't something you tone down for the room. It's what fills it.

Román Baldorioty de Castro spent his life arguing — in print, in classrooms, in the halls of government — that Puerto Rico deserved both freedom and an educated citizenry to make the most of it. He helped push through the 1873 abolition of slavery and never stopped teaching after. Some people build monuments. He built the people who'd go on to build everything else.

Ismael Rivera grew up in Santurce, and by the time the world started calling him "El Sonero Mayor," he'd already turned the street rhythms of plena into something the whole island sang along to. His voice could carry sorrow and swagger in the same breath — that's the gift. Some sounds don't fade. They just keep finding new ears.

René Marqués wrote La Carreta, the story of a Puerto Rican family's migration from the countryside to San Juan to New York City — and in doing so, wrote the most performed play in the island's history. He put words to a journey that so many Puerto Rican families, including our own, know by heart.

Luis Palés Matos wrote Puerto Rico's Afro-Caribbean rhythms directly onto the page, pioneering a style of poetry that put Black identity and heritage at the center of the island's literary voice decades before it was fashionable to do so. He heard music other poets weren't listening for.

They called Tito Rodríguez "El Inolvidable" — the unforgettable — and at the Palladium Ballroom in the 1950s, his voice went head-to-head with Tito Puente's band for mambo supremacy every single night. Two Puerto Rican kids — one from San Juan, one from Spanish Harlem — turned a midtown dance floor into the center of the musical universe. That's the kind of rivalry that makes history.

Ana Roqué de Duprey documented over 6,000 plant species, fought for women's right to vote, and helped found the institution that became the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez — all in one extraordinary life.

Omi Hopper turned her grandmother's recipes into a cookbook — and turned a national television audience on to the Puerto Rican home cooking she grew up on, competing on Next Level Chef and writing Cooking con Omi: A Love Letter to Puerto Rican Home Cooking. The best recipes were never a secret. They were just waiting for somebody to write them down.

Luis A. Ferré built Ponce Cement into one of Puerto Rico's largest companies, then turned around and poured that success into founding the Museo de Arte de Ponce — now one of the finest art collections in the Caribbean. He believed a business owed something back to the place that made it. We believe that too.

Born in Mayagüez, Orlando Bravo became Puerto Rico's first-ever billionaire — and after Hurricane Maria, he didn't just watch from the mainland, he coordinated relief shipments and committed $100 million to grow the island's next generation of entrepreneurs. Success means nothing if you don't send the elevator back down.

In 1954, bartender Ramón "Monchito" Marrero mixed rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice at San Juan's Caribe Hilton — and the piña colada, Puerto Rico's official national drink, was born. Small ideas, mixed with heart, become the things everyone remembers.
