Last month, I was asked to trial the new Olsen Coffee Maker: http://partners.simplygoodcoffee.com/libertycity. I accepted the challenge, and brewed a lot of coffee, often 2 pots per day, tossing out whatever we didn't drink, just to try it as much as possible.

Along the way, I experimented with batch sizes, the "bloom" feature and Variable Release Valve on the brew basket ( #4 filters).

I was skeptical, since it's 2022 and what's new? I freely admit that I really like some things about this brewer. The most obvious to anyone may be "Technivorm-inspired design at less than half the cost". Absolutely guilty! 100%

There are two features that really impress me:

1. Bloom Switch. Hit before brewing, and it adds ~35 sec to the early brew. Definitely nice for fresh-roasted coffee!

2. The real game changer is the "Variable Release Valve" on the brew basket.

For any who own a Technivorm, they have a simple switch: "open", "closed" or "partially open". A nice idea but actually very limited in practice.

The Olsen has an infinitely variable lever that rotates a silicone stopper across the opening at the base of the brew basket.

It can be open, closed, or anywhere in-between! This gives you total control over flow rate from brew basket to carafe.

So, what's the big deal? This seemingly simple feature allows it to brew everything from a single cup to a full pot, with fresh-roasted coffee - and we all know that is really challenging.

Guess what? They have no idea how cool and powerful this is yet (not mentioned at all on their website) Ha! 🙂

So, I will post a few photos or maybe even a video, to illustrate the point. Here's my rundown - feel free to ask questions.

The Pros
1. Great looks
2. Reasonable cost ($150).
3. Ease of operation and cleanup
4. Brew basket held in place with magnet
5. Can brew 1 cup to full pot (variable switch)
6. Bloom feature
7. Attractive glass carafe

The Cons
1. Hot plate is auto on at end of brew for 30-40 min. So, we manually turn the brewer off at end of cycle. It's not a deal killer but I'm being honest as always.

2. No thermal carafe option. Ok so it's a first release and a darn good one. Let's be honest and admit that most thermal carafes are "meh" or average. If you want a good one - buy a Zojirushi. Trust me - they are the bomb, especially their glass lined options.

My new favorite grinder! https://amzn.to/3ACRorj A new modern look, with the same quality internals and sharp metal burrs as my "last favorite". Only 11" high. Quieter motor, Infinite dial (not stepped). Only $70 and can do espresso, drip, pour-over and french press.

The quality at this price is insanely good. The hopper isn't quite as nice for "single shot" loads - a friend printed a new one for me - it's the same opening as the other model. The grind catcher is much nicer on this model.

Hopper capacity is about 4 oz I would say. I'll have to measure it for you guys.
