Some of the dates are a little foggy, but we’ll do our best and maybe some of you can fill in the gaps.
The Amicarelli brothers came to the Americas in the 50s: Uncle Nick, Uncle Fred, our father/ grandfather Alex. Our Uncle Fred began work at local Capozios Pizza. A few years later, he opened Romas in Bridgman (1967). Shortly after, Alex took over the Bridgman store, and Uncle Fred moved to South Haven, MI, and opened the Vineyard. Not long after, Uncle Nick joined in the pizza-making and opened the location in New Buffalo, MI.
The three brothers then went on to open many more Romas and establishments. Uncle Nick started Coloma, MI ( owned by Ray Amicarelli) St.Joseph now Barnstormers, and a location in Dowagiac, MI.
Uncle Fred was hugely successful at the vineyard and focused on that beautiful restaurant, but he helped establish the Berrien Springs location, that everyone now knows as the lovely Townhall Pizza.
Alex took Romas and spread it as far as he could. A location in Michigan City, IN, South Haven, MI, Bangor, MI, and a few restaurants that weren’t Romas Pizza.
We can’t forget Amicarelli’s Cantina Dei Cugini in Benton Harbor, MI (Alex jr, Ray) and Agnone Pizza South Bend, IN (Cassie, Ashley).
Many of these establishments have been sold or were initially sold to other families! There are three Amicarelli-ran, owned, and operated Romas still in existence!!
Bridgman, New Buffalo, and Coloma. All the same family, but don’t be confused: we are all separate establishments and entities!! Our roots are in our family.
Missing a pic of uncle Fred 😞
