Where will your Thanksgiving turkey come from? 🦃

Have you thought about it yet?

I know grocery stores will offer deep discounts, special sales, and even free turkeys. Those offers can be difficult to turn down—especially during an expensive season.

But the price on the package does not tell you how that turkey was raised, what it ate, or who cared for it.

If knowing those things matters to you, I want to give you time to plan.

Our local, pastured farm raised Thanksgiving turkey presale will open in early October.

I’ll send the details before reservations begin so you can decide whether one of our pasture-raised turkeys belongs at the center of your Thanksgiving table.

“The pigs are in the yard, Mom!” 🐷

That is how our morning started—before breakfast.

From the house, we could see pigs roaming where they definitely weren’t supposed to be. Their pasture is within view, so the kids and I headed outside to keep them from wandering any farther.

Pigs are not especially easy to herd. If they’re not hungry, convincing them to go where you want can be quite a challenge.

Farmer Reuben came out with feed, which persuaded some of them. The farm crew later improved the fencing, moved the pigs into a fresh section of the vegetable field, and made sure the electric lines were working properly.

Now the pigs are stretched out in the sun, perfectly content in their new grassy area. ☀️

Our summer cucumber and squash field has finished producing for the season, so the pigs will now move through sections of that field during their final months of growing.

As they root around, they disturb weeds, turn the soil, and leave behind natural fertilizer. That fertility becomes part of the soil that will feed the crops planted there next spring.

This is regenerative farming in real life—benefits, challenges, and all.

Healthy food starts with healthy soil. Sometimes caring for that soil looks like carefully planned crop rotations and intentionally moving animals through the fields.

And every once in a while, it looks like interrupting breakfast to keep the pigs from meeting the grandchildren on the back porch—or sampling the flower beds beside the house. 😄

🌿 Health Tip: Fennel has more to offer than flavor.

Fennel is rich in fiber to support healthy digestion, vitamin C for immune health, and potassium to help your muscles, nerves, and heart function well.

Its distinctive anise flavor comes from a natural compound called anethole, which also has antioxidant properties.

Our new Sustainer CSA member, Melinda, just cooked fennel for the first time this week and told me she loves both its unique flavor and the health benefits it brings to a meal.

She’s sharing her chicken and fennel recipe in our members-only Telegram chat. If you see Melinda join, give her a warm welcome—and be sure to ask for the recipe! 💚

Not sure how to use fennel? Slice it thin for salads, roast it until sweet and tender, or cook it with chicken, potatoes, and onions. Even the feathery tops can be chopped and used like an herb.

One of Reuben's favorite jobs on the farm is picking green beans.

He settles between the rows, lifts the leaves, searches for another handful of beans, gives them a careful tug, drops them into the basket, and scoots along to the next plant.

There's something almost meditative about it.

While Reuben was harvesting beans on Monday, the rest of the week looked very different.

Our farm boy, Blaise, was running the vegetable crew while Andres and his family traveled back to the hospital for another surgery for baby Diego.

One of Blaise's jobs was teaching our 12-year-old farm boy how to mow between the flower rows. Before Lily and Annika can gather armfuls of flowers for this week's bouquets, someone has to keep the weeds under control. After a quick lesson, he proudly took over the job himself.

This week, all of that work comes together in one of my favorite kinds of meals—the simple summer dinners that hardly need a recipe at all.

I love moments like this because they remind me that a farm isn't just vegetables and animals. It's people stepping in to help one another, learning new skills, and working together so beautiful things can grow.

Way to go, farm boy! Enjoy the power—and the flowers! 🌻
