As small business owners, we’ve watched a lot of businesses close their doors lately, and we wanted to share a little perspective from our side of things. Not for sympathy — but because understanding small businesses better helps communities know how to support them.
The truth is, small businesses survive on consistency. You may love a business and support it often, but when sales fluctuate heavily week to week, it becomes difficult to cover expenses, payroll, food costs, utilities, and everything else that happens behind the scenes.
For many of us, one source of income isn’t enough. At Brazil KitchFix, we’ve expanded into catering, meal prep, lunches, Grab & Gos, charcuteries, events, and more — not because every area is highly profitable, but because diversifying helps us survive slower seasons. Many of the services we offer today were created during slower months while trying to find ways to better serve our community and keep our doors open.
Something many people may not realize is that small businesses often cannot accommodate last-minute requests the way large corporations can. We shop, prep, and staff based on preorders and projected demand. Planning ahead is what allows us to operate efficiently and avoid waste.
At the same time, we’re also balancing real life — families, school events, sports schedules, late nights, early mornings, and trying to protect some kind of work-life balance while building something we truly care about.
Living in a small town brings unique challenges too. We’re incredibly grateful for our local support, but smaller communities naturally mean a smaller customer base. To continue growing, many businesses have to branch into surrounding towns and cities, take on more services, travel more, and stretch themselves thin — often without the ability to hire additional help because of the unpredictability of business week to week.
Some businesses provide necessities. Others provide conveniences, experiences, or services people enjoy when they’re able to. Neither is wrong. We understand that not every service fits every budget all the time, and that’s okay.
What matters most to us is learning how we can continue serving our community in ways that are helpful, sustainable, and valuable to you. We genuinely want feedback. What services help you most? What would you like to see more of? What makes supporting a small business easier for your family?
We’re thankful for every order, every share, every recommendation, and every person who continues choosing small businesses like ours. It truly matters more than people realize.
