SG Goodman was incredible tonight.

Talk about immersive sound!? Wow! That was beautiful. John Kiran Fernandes and Russell Franklin brought a wonderful set of atmospheric, meditative music to the High Dive tonight. We can’t wait to have them back. Afterwards the crowd stuck around while we listened to The Olivia Tremor Control’s two albums in their entirety: Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage. Masterpieces. Looking forward to the new OTC album coming this fall.

Wednesday: OutKast – Speakerbo###/The Love Below

Speakerbo###/The Love Below splits into two solo discs, Big Boi’s P-Funk-driven Southern rap and André 3000’s genre-blurring psych-funk experiment. Anchored by “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move,” it reinvented what a hip-hop record could sound like. It won Album of the Year at the Grammys, only the second rap album ever to do so. Turns 23 this week.

Thursday: A Tribe Called Quest – The Low End Theory

The Low End Theory fused live upright bass with dusty jazz samples, giving Q-Tip and Phife Dawg’s rhymes room to breathe. Its minimalism became its own kind of virtuosity. Widely credited as the bridge between jazz and hip-hop that shaped a generation of producers. Turns 35 this week.

Friday: Nirvana – Nevermind

Nevermind pulled grunge out of the Seattle underground and onto mainstream radio overnight. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the calling card, but “Come As You Are” and “Lithium” hit just as hard. Butch Vig’s production gave Cobain’s songwriting a polish that made the anger land harder. Turns 35 this week, released the same week as Thursday’s pick.

Saturday: The Beatles – Abbey Road

Abbey Road was the last album the four Beatles ever recorded together, capturing a band at its peak even as it quietly fell apart. Side two’s extended medley remains one of the most seamless stretches of songwriting in the catalog. The zebra crossing on its cover became one of the most recreated images in music history. Turns 57 this week.

Sunday: Dion – Born to Be with You

Born to Be with You paired doo-wop veteran Dion with a cavernous, cinematic Phil Spector production, trading brightness for something darker. It flopped on release but was later reclaimed as a cult classic, cited by Bruce Springsteen and Bono as a favorite. A strange, rewarding detour in both artists’ careers.

High Dive is honored to welcome John Kiran Fernandes and franklin this Thursday. John was an original member of The Olivia Tremor Control, one of the most important bands to come out of the South during the 1990’s and a core part of the legendary Elephant 6 Recording Company collective. John & Franklin will be performing a 45-minute live set (7pm), followed by an Olivia Tremor Control vinyl listening party in ultra High Fidelity. John’s music consists of ambient, minimalist looped clarinet. Beautiful, haunting, and meditative.

Join us Wednesday for a deep listening celebration of John Coltrane’s 100th birthday.

Born four months after Miles Davis, John Coltrane was, in our opinion, the most important figure in modern jazz. We will be spinning vinyl, playing Atmos spatial surround selections, and showing some video as well. Roughly chronological.

Come, relax, and let sound cleanse your soul. This type of event is what High Dive HiFi Lounge was built for.

We’ll have music playing in the Lounge, and outside in our Courtyard and Music Park.

$10 at the door. Bring anyone. Tell everyone.

Got requests or suggestions? Drop them in the comments…

CEO John “Mook” Gibbons and Ray Acosta spoke to participants in the City of Birmingham Youth Services’ RESTORE program. Mayor Randall Woodfin joined as well. All delivered great messages. An inspirational morning.
