Good morning from Coronado Historic Site at Kuaua Pueblo!

Do you know which other pueblos were geographically closest to Kuaua prior to the Coronado Expedition of 1540? While our current neighbors at Sandia, Santa Ana, and San Felipe are still located nearby, there were actually two other villages even closer to Kuaua at that time! Within two miles of the site, to the southwest and southeast, respectively, were the pueblos of Santiago and Watche.

Santiago was excavated with Kuaua in the 1930s. Alongside Pueblo material, a fair number of Spanish artifacts, such as copper crossbow bolts, were also found here. This has led some to believe this was the village forcefully occupied by the Spaniards, to be used as their base, between 1540-1542.

Watche, on the east side of the Rio Grande, was excavated much later, in 1980. While plenty of 15th-century pottery was uncovered, it’s unknown as to whether or not this village was still occupied during the 1500s. In any case, the timelines for all three villages at least partially overlap. Due to this, as well as their geographic proximity, these pueblos likely had frequent contact with one another.
