In the aftermath of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that hit northeast Japan on March 11, 2011, a group of concerned Japanese citizens living in Central Oregon came together to raise money for the relief effort. Coming out of the incredibly successful Dinner for Japan Relief, Yukiko McLaughlin is continuing to bring authentic and healthy Japanese cuisine to Bend, Oregon. Bento (弁当 ) is a single

-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container. Bend-o Bento brings this traditional meal to our friends and families for their health and enjoyment!!

藤咲く渓谷と、谷に沿って走る赤い列車。
JR豊肥本線の宮地駅（標高538メートル）を出発した赤色のディーゼルカーは、九州で最も高い鉄道駅・波野駅（標高754メートル）を目指し、標高差216メートルをゆっくりと登りながら、深い谷に沿って阿蘇の外輪山へと進んでいきます。
1928年（昭和3年）に開業した波野駅を含む宮地〜玉来間は、豊肥本線で最後に開業した区間です。車窓からは、険しい地形を克服して線路を敷いた当時の苦労が感じられます。
阿蘇では藤の花が 春の終わりから初夏にかけて 咲き、渓谷を藤色に彩ります。

小松ヶ丘から望む太平洋の夕焼けと、都井岬の野生馬の親子。この春に生まれた春駒が草原で遊んでいます。
都井岬では、国の天然記念物である 御崎馬（みさきうま） が、今も野生のまま暮らしています。御崎馬は江戸時代初期、高鍋藩が軍馬育成のためにこの地へ放ったのが始まりです。軍馬としての役目がなくなった後は、人の手を離れて自然繁殖し、野生のまま現在まで生き続けてきました。都井岬の草原には、約100頭の御崎馬が自由に暮らしています。撮影：2025年5月26日、宮崎県串間市、EMIKO KOBAYASHI。
