Skywood Food Forest

Skywood Food Forest This is a project funded by a private, non-profit operating foundation, the Ciel Foundation.

Its three primary goals are 1) establishment of a demonstration site of intensive, beyond organic, food production using permaculture no-till, agro-ecological techniques; 2) production of food to donate to the local community; and 3) education through demonstration of innovative food-growing techniques, tours, and workshops.

The Salish Seed Guild grows proven, locally adapted varieties for seed, processes the seed and donates them to the wider community. It's just one of many efforts needed for local food reliance.

Mason bees (and others) enjoying the overflow water in the little created stream bed. This was in a natural low spot that ran between the two 3000 sq. ft. greenhouses previously on site. I placed a small dam downstream (so to speak), added bentonite and rocks. The head of the stream is currently my lawn hydrant but may eventually become overflow from a swale. There's not a lot of elev. change on site but enough to mimic an actual stream. The bees are taking full advantage as it's right near their nesting boxes. It's a great source of mud for them as they partition off the eggs in their cells as well. It's well shaded to the south so it should act as a local water source throughout the summer months, right next to my wildflower and pollinator garden.

An interesting article that supports the idea of promoting diversity in agricultural ecosystems while also serving to remind us of the old ecological adage, "you can never do just one thing."

Harnessing natural insect power can. with proper management, have higher efficacy than resorting to harmful chemicals
