They say never meet your heroes.

I don’t think that’s true. The hard part is remembering that the people you look up to are exactly that… people. They are fully human, fully capable of having bad days or off moments.

Ava DuVernay ( Ava DuVernay ) is a hero of mine. She has created transcendent, essential works like When They See Us, Selma, and 13th—art that deeply illuminates the Black American experience.

When I met her today, she looked at me, said “there he goes,” stood up, and hugged me. It instantly reminded me of one of my cousins back home in Ohio who hadn’t seen me since the last family reunion. Her kindness was intrinsic, completely unperformative. She asked me about my life, and she asked me why I started The Nest.

Honestly, she was so focused on making me feel seen that I almost didn’t get a chance to tell her how much her work means to me. Before she left, she encouraged us to take a picture, and I finally managed to squeak out how impactful her vision has been in helping me feel seen as a Black man in America (and how I cried my way through the end of When They See Us).

She told me that when she first started out, she wanted to direct every genre imaginable. But she eventually had to settle into the fact that it’s okay if her specific gift is making things that make people cry.
It was a powerful reminder that God gives us unique gifts—even if they aren’t always the ones we initially envisioned for ourselves. If we can truly settle into them, we can accomplish great things. I never envisioned opening a restaurant like this. But Ava reminded me today that if we can repeatedly settle into what is placed right in front of us, what our purpose and gifts are we can make a massive impact.

Meet your heroes. Just remember they are people.

Today, Ms. Ava was just a woman out to eat with her beautiful mom at a super dope brunch spot. 😉

We’re asking guests to bring a pair of kids’ sneakers or back-to-school supplies to help support children in need.
