We closed our doors to the public Friday night after nearly two years of serving our community. This season was shorter than we imagined, but filled with countless new friendships and wonderful memories. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.
We created Somewhere To Go Cafe' because we knew there was a need in Bedford. When we moved here from South Florida in 2007, we heard many times "The young people in Bedford need somewhere to go. They hang out in the Walmart parking lot and get in trouble. There isn't a movie theater, skating rink, bowling alley or any place for them to enjoy. " We also learned that many folks travel to Lynchburg or Roanoke to work, find entertainment, or dine out. If you ever wondered where the name came from, now you know.
As we pondered how we could help with that, we began new careers as Special Education teachers. In the classroom we saw firsthand the needs of our new hometown. Our next step of faith was to become foster parents. Over a 7 year period we parented 24 children in our home. That was a 24/7 job that came with many challenges and blessings. My husband, Ed was also called into Christian ministry, was ordained, and pastored a youth group while serving as the associate pastor at Thaxton Baptist Church. More blessings came as we faithfully followed His lead. After our 4th adopted child joined our family we knew it was time to close our home as foster parents and pursue the next chapter of life. We put our time, talents, and money into opening Somewhere To Go Café to meet the needs of our community.
If you are asking the question "Why did they close the café?", here is the answer. The demands of owning and operating a café created a hardship for our big family. We have 11 children and 13 grandchildren. We have had to sacrifice time with them to meet the needs of our business. The two of us haven't had much time together away from the café and relationships are built on quality time together. These needs take priority over any business venture or job. God used us for this season to grow relationships within our community and we are so thankful for that. God also provided a new opportunity for the next season of our life.
Ed will be returning to the classroom after a 10 year break. He wasn't seeking this opportunity. He was literally called to take this job. After lots of hard conversations and prayers we agreed that this would be best for our family. That meant we couldn't continue to operate the café successfully. It was time to pass the baton and give someone else a chance to run the race. Now you know our reason why and you may share this information.
For those wanting to stay in touch with us, you can find us on Facebook: Edward Nickols and Irene Purvis Nickols. You can also find us on Sunday mornings at Bedrock Community Church where our family worships our Lord and serves our community. On Wednesday evenings we lead a Life Group and you are invited to join us as we do life together. Pastor Ed is still officiating wedding ceremonies and funeral services. While Ed is teaching at Staunton River Middle School, I will continue homeschooling our youngest daughter and caring for two of our adult children who have special needs. I will also continue to teach at Peaksview Christian Home Educators on Wednesdays. You may see us out in the community supporting other small businesses and participating in local events. We are looking forward to having nights, weekends, holidays, and summers off to love on our family and travel.
For those wanting to know what will happen to our café, stay tuned and keep praying. God is good, all the time!
