Anyone else missing the old railway recently? 🚡 For most of the last century you didn’t hike Mount Beacon, you rode it. The Incline Railway opened on Memorial Day 1902 with two cable cars, a 65% grade, billed as the steepest in the world. Sixteen hundred people rode it that first day.

Waiting at the top: a casino, a dance hall, a small zoo, and eventually a 60-room hotel. D.W. Griffith shot silent films up there before he was famous. In 1926 alone, 110,000 people made the trip.

Then came the fires, the hotel and casino in 1927, and more over the years. By 1978 it was done. There were roughly 3 million rides over the 76 year period.
