🍄 One year ago, these would have been headed to the kitchen.

Yesterday I wandered the woods and found one of my favorite signs of a Northwoods summer, golden chanterelles and a beautiful patch of chicken of the woods.

For years, I’d spend afternoons foraging before bringing these treasures back to The Balsam Lake Café, where they became one of our most-loved breakfast dishes. Seeing them always brings back memories of busy weekends, full dining rooms, and conversations over coffee.

This summer is different. For the first time in years, these mushrooms aren’t headed to the restaurant, they’re headed to my own dinner table.

I miss creating those dishes for all of you, but I’m incredibly grateful for the memories we made together. Thank you for making them possible.

What’s your favorite wild edible to find in a Wisconsin summer?

Today the artwork came down off the walls.

The favorite mugs were packed away to find a shelf of honor in my home.

The register went into a box.

And I changed the letters on this little sign.

For years it stood on Main Street announcing specials, holiday hours, soup of the day, live music, closures, celebrations and the occasional bit of mischief. It made people laugh. It started conversations. It became part of the routine for locals and a landmark for visitors.

Today it made its most bittersweet announcement yet.

Balsam Lake Cafe. Permanently Closed.

Seven years somehow feels like both a lifetime and the blink of an eye.

Tomorrow I’ll come back and pack some more. Another shelf will be emptied. Another piece of the story will find its next home.

And this little sign?

Who knows what it will read tomorrow.

Maybe, it still has a few stories left to tell.

❤️

🚨 CASE FILE: THE DISAPPEARING MIMOSAS 🚨

After years of pouring flights that turned “just breakfast” into “well… one more round,” the evidence is in:

This is your LAST CHANCE for Mimosa Flights at The Balsam Lake Cafe. 🍊🥂

Today until 2PM
AND
Tomorrow from 8AM–2PM

The suspects include:
🍋 Lemonades
🫐 Berry blends
🍊 Classic orange
…and a few accomplices that have caused questionable brunch decisions over the years.

We’ve watched first dates turn into regulars, lake weekends become traditions, and “I’ll just have coffee” become “actually… bring the flight.”

The 82.82 Investigation may never fully close…
…but the Mimosa Files officially do this weekend.

Come raise a glass with us one last time before this case goes cold forever. 🕵️‍♀️✨

Today will be one of our first “lasts” at the café.

It’s Mother’s Day, and the last Mother’s Day we’ll get to celebrate with all of you here. What feels especially fitting is that Mother’s Day was also the very first holiday we were ever open seven years ago.

Back then, we had no idea what this little café would become.

We didn’t know we’d watch babies become kids ordering pancakes on their own.We didn’t know we’d become part of weekly routines, post-church breakfasts, first dates, family traditions, celebrations, and hard days that just needed coffee and comfort food.

This week also brought another quiet “last”, saying goodbye to the men’s church breakfast group that has faithfully gathered with us once a month. Watching those familiar faces walk out the door knowing it was likely the final time hit me harder than I expected.

These final weeks are strange and beautiful all at once.Every ordinary moment suddenly feels important.

So today, as we pour coffee, refill mugs, run food, hug necks, and celebrate moms, I just want you all to know how grateful I am.

Thank you for making this place more than a restaurant. You made it a part of people’s lives.

And that’s something I’ll carry with me forever. ❤️

The Great Balsam Lake Café Mug Adoption Event has begun.

Over the years, our mismatched thrift store mugs have:
☕ survived endless coffee refills
☕ listened to small town gossip
☕ comforted hangovers
☕ witnessed first dates, breakups, celebrations, and detective investigations

And now…

as we head into our final weeks, they’re ready for retirement homes.

For the next two weeks:

🖤 Buy bottomless coffee
🖤 Fall in love with your mug
🖤 Take it home with you

Some are weird.
Some are classy.
Some definitely have stories.

Mug adoption starts now. Suggested mug adoption donation: $10

Seven years ago this weekend, we quietly opened our doors—and watched something really special unfold. What started as a little café became part of a much bigger story… your story. And ours.

We’ve been so proud to be a part of this community’s journey.

Through COVID. Through personal heartbreak. Through celebrations big and small.
Whether you’ve gotten a little tipsy on the patio, shared a quiet cup of coffee, or filled your table with scratch-made comfort food, you’ve made this place what it is.

We’ve watched babies go from the belly to their first high chair… and their first pancake.
We’ve helped break the awkwardness of first dates.
Celebrated with you on wedding mornings.
Nursed you through a few “the night before was a little too fun” breakfasts.
Sat with you in moments of loss while I quietly carried some of my own.

You’ve watched my kids grow into adults.
And I’ve watched yours head off into the world.

These roots run deep. And I am so incredibly proud of what we’ve built together.

And here’s the honest part,
this closing isn’t just about a building or a lease.

It’s about a life that’s shifting.

The same experiences that shaped this café…
my husband’s fight, Maddisyn’s journey, and the moments that changed everything,
are now leading me deeper into healthcare.

So this isn’t just an ending.
It’s a redirection.

As we head into our final weeks as your community café, we’re definitely not going quietly.
We’ve got some fun things planned, a few surprises, and plenty of reasons to come in “one more time” (which we all know never really means just once).

We reopen tomorrow with some new menu items, hot coffee and lattes, and a few new heat & eat freezer options. Memorial Day will be our last day open.

Let’s make these last moments the best ones yet. 🤍

With so much love,
Angela ♥️

🕵️‍♀️ CASE FILE: LIMITED WINDOW 🕵️‍♀️ 🌎 🍽️

Some things… don’t stick around forever.

And this one?
Already raising suspicions.

🍔 1/3 lb smash burger
🧀 Cheddar + pepper jack melted right into the beef
🌿 Ranch seasoning (we’re not answering questions about how much)
🥨 Grilled pretzel bun
🥬 Crisp romaine + thick-cut tomato
🔥 Cooked hot, smashed right, edges exactly how they should be

Served with fries + a pickle that’s just here for the ride.

We’re not saying you need to come in tomorrow…

…but if you’ve been thinking about it,
this might be your sign.

CASE FILE 82.82 — FIELD NOTES

We’ve received a few questions lately…

Yes, the building is for sale.
No, the café is not included.

The coffee is still brewing.
The biscuits are still rising.
And we’re still right here doing what we’ve always done.

If anything… it’s made us a little more aware
of just how much this place means.

Next week marks 7 years since we first got the keys.
Seven years of early mornings, full tables, familiar faces and more stories than we could ever count.

We’re planning a few fun things to celebrate
because something like that deserves a little attention.

In the meantime…
we’ll be here.
