Dear Good Eggers,
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Good Egg at 140 Winslow Way in the Winslow Green. For three years it has been the sole focus of our lives, and for the past two and half years we have been floored by the community that formed around our unpolished, open-hearted offering. The life of Good Egg was a success. You made it so. Thank you.
We are shuttering our business because we cannot keep it the same and make it work, and we cannot manipulate the model and keep its soul. We know there will be successes from this time- people that will build a business to serve the needs of this new normal. But it won't be Good Egg- a place that was built on the idea of being "a nice place for people to sit, eat, and drink together."
What comes next is as complex to answer as how this potent moment in history came to pass. We will take some time to hibernate and pay attention. We'll read the signs, follow legislation, notice how the culture of food and hospitality are forever altered by this nexus of public health crisis and outcry about economic and racial disparity. From this continued work we will create a new vision for how to best serve the community we live in. It will take time. Please stay tuned.
The biggest loss will be the vibrancy of our Good Egg community; the incredibly talented, compassionate Good Egg staff, the regulars who just did not *budge* from their chosen dish, and the visitors that were starting to become recurring friendly faces on longer arcs of time. Ooof. It really stings.
The spirit of the Good Egg community was forged in an open-minded attendance to one another. It is proof positive that this island desires expressive individuality, funky whole foods, and access to a variety of experiences and perspectives. The community that existed around the tables and chairs of Good Egg exist around this island all the time. Gather up that spirit and keep it alive, regardless of the change of venue. Decentralize your little radical weirdo and spread it out beyond breakfast. This is no time to hold back on our capacity to attend to the needs of one another. It is time to listen very closely to what is needed most.
We owe a debt of gratitude to our families and friends for supporting us from the outset, to our AMAZING UNICORN STAFF that just won't ever be matched in pure alchemical juju for Goodness and Talent, the Winslow Green community that helped us navigate our growth, and our landlords Nick and Peg Nickum, who gave us a chance to build on our dream and now deliver us from this crisis with an enormous generosity of grace.
We will be champions of whatever grows next in that beautiful location. See this letter from our landlords for more information. We will keep our lines of communication open. We will read everything that you send us, but we may not respond. We feel the Love. We Love you, too.
Be Safe, Healthy, and Radical.
Always,
Alice and Lena
