The invention of basketball and early years of basketball.

In 1891, a fierce winter storm forced students at Springfield College to stay indoors. Bored and restless, they needed something to do.

Luckily, their teacher, James Naismith, had an idea. Naismith asked the school janitor for two peach baskets, which he nailed to the balcony railings of the gym.

He grabbed a soccer ball and told the students to try to toss it into the opposing team’s basket. On that day basketball was invented.

The students loved it. The game quickly spread around the country and also began to evolve.

At first, teams could have up to 40 players, however that soon changed. Over time, five-player teams became the standard. In 1895, backboards were added to stop fans sitting on balconies from interfering with the ball.

The soccer ball was replaced by a basketball two years after the invention of the game. Eventually, the bottoms of the peach baskets were removed so the ball didn’t have to be fished out after every score. And in 1901, dribbling was officially allowed, giving the game a whole new rhythm.

In the following decades basketball quickly became a sport played around the world.
