As architects, we have a love of the old. The patina, stories, memory, and craftsmanship that make a place feel rooted.

We’re equally drawn to the new, with its promise of performance, quality, and technological advances.

At Moontower, we don’t see those as a binary choice. We choose both.

Different homes require different recipes for mixing old and new. At our Hyde Park house, we took a new-construction path while borrowing older patterns for the massing, roof forms, and windows to honor the intact streetscape of bungalows that gives this Austin neighborhood so much of its character.

New construction, with an old soul. 🏡

Special thanks to some of our favorite collaborators who help us build new homes that feel like they belong.

🤓🥳 Q3 Collective Success!

Thank you, Suman and Jessica, from Cherry Talent Group Cherry Talent Group at last week’s Curious Builder Collective in Austin!

With a focus on Building an Amazing Team: retention, scaling up, and scaling back, the conversations allowed companies to trade notes on the ups and downs of running a small business and often self-managing HR.
How to establish and maintain a positive culture, what resources you can leverage to recruit, and how to set and hold standards so you can be clear and kind with your team.

We appreciate everyone coming out and sharing your experiences! Looking forward to doing it all again in November when we discuss Multiple Streams of Income.
Do you run a cabinet shop? Interior Design services? Rent shop space to a collaborator?
Or something wildly unique?
We can’t wait to hear your story and learn from each other.

The camaraderie is great, and we encourage all of you builders to invest in face-to-face time with your peers. You don’t have to do this alone - when you can borrow and share to avoid the most common pitfalls. The community we are building is really hard to beat — with the Curious Builder Collective framework, it’s easy to fuel your conversation.

The Austin we love is here! ❤️

Proud to begin my second year on the Preservation Austin Board—and honored to step into the role of President-Elect.

Inspired by the remarks from Executive Director Lindsey Derrington, Past President Miriam Conner, and President Travis Smith, and excited to keep doing the work of preserving the places, stories, and character that make Austin feel like Austin.

If you love this city, check out Preservation Austin and get involved. 🏡

Nothing beats a “hands-on” trunk show with our favorite manufacturers and artisans. In June we were able to share our studio to showcase the latest from in a casual and collaborative mid-day get together. We got to “ooh” and “ahh” with fellow designers as we pulled samples for upcoming projects and fueled each others creativity. We love the collaborative spirit in Austin!

The artistry and immediacy of the patterns comes directly from mind-hand connection of Rebecca at work - loved hearing about her process and seeing her sketches and watercolors. Still inspired weeks later 🥰

Thank you for attending:

DM us if you’d like to attend a future Vendor’s Table at Moontower!

🤓🥳 Collective Success!

A big thanks to Julia at Pella for hosting yesterday’s Curious Builder Collective in Austin!

With a focus on Investors and Financing the conversations allowed companies to trade notes on a part of the home building world that asks: What happens if you start with a project first? We are so used to bespoke projects originating with our clients that it’s a big mental shift to think of taking all our neighborhood know-how and frequently requested must-haves from clients and incorporating them into a home. The upside? Making a home for sale thats ideal for a homebuyer who doesn’t have the time for the multi-year custom process.
We talked about lenders, proformas, deal structures, exit strategies, and how to mitigate risk. Contract types, software tips, and even a side convo about panelized construction found its way into the mix.
Face to face time with your peers is really hard to beat and with the Collective framework it’s easy to fuel the conversation.

We appreciate everyone coming out and sharing your experiences! Looking forward to doing it all again in September when we discuss Team Management / Hiring & Firing.

What if your 1964 ranch-style home already had everything it needed?

The mature trees. The established neighborhood. The memories. The character.

But what if it didn’t support the life you want to live today?

More light, opportunity for gathering, space for growing kids (and play dates). A welcoming suite for parents and guests. Room to care for the people who matter most.

For this renovation, we opened the floor plan and used strategic skylights to bring in natural light and although the original home played it straight with 8’ ceilings throughout and mostly white walls and carpeted rooms we added warm wood ceilings and Southwestern influences, introduced bold colors and personality, and created spaces that support the way this family lives today by adding an all seasons screened porch for gathering to a private suite for guests.

At Moontower, we believe great renovations honor what’s worth keeping while making room for what comes next.

What part of your home would you never want to lose?

Check out an old favorite of ours this weekend on the home tour. This Saturday, you can see Nick Deaver’s award-winning “Lean Too,” an addition we were honored to build about 10 years ago.

Now on its second owner and with an updated interior by (not pictured here) the original home and modern addition will be 1 of 10 unique and storied spaces rarely available for public access.

Get your tickets from Preservation Austin and see an incredible cross-section of Austin’s neighborhoods and preserved homes. All proceeds go to PA programming, advocacy, education, and grants efforts that help keep Austin’s soul standing.

Moontower is a proud sponsor of the tour and PA year round. Frank will be at the Newning house Saturday morning - do drop by and say “hi” - and if you aren’t a member of Preservation Austin yet, then please join and support special places and the history behind them today!
