Pulling the Moon card on a new moon has to be auspicious, right? RIGHT?

I’ve been deep in the underwater caves of the unknown lately, trying to make decisions without as much certainty as I’d like. And it hasn’t been super fun, but I’ve been trying to trust the intuition that this card encourages me to trust.

Dreams are another theme of this card, and my dreams have been off the hook since moving to Spain. Each night, another friend from some stage of my life joins me on an adventure, from starting a union to taking a train ride to going back to Austin to pack things I forgot.

These dreams and decision-making moment are, frankly, exhausting, but I know that I can go as slow as I need and that means maybe slower than I want.

I am trying to trust past me for looking out for future me, while also living as a present me looking out for another future me. Although I might feel surrounded by unknowns, that future me is not unknown.

She’s here with me now, too.

Here’s a fun new way to connect about tarot!

Inspired by the incredible WhatsApp communities that have made our transition to Valencia so smooth, I decided to launch a tarot group called The Death Card Club VLC!

You don’t have to live in Valencia to join, but we’ll be doing bilingual tarot learning and community building via this group chat. (And I’ll host in-person events here soon!)

It’s a place to ask questions, share your own interpretations, expand your relationship with the cards, yourself and fellow tarot folks.

As you can tell from the name, this group is centered in community-building around grief and the individual work needed to contribute toward collective healing.

It’s emergent strategy at work! Come join us!

Find the link in the bio or shoot me a DM and I’ll add you. 🫶🫶

Mira mira. My first tarot encounter in Spain was at 50/50 SKATESHOP (EST2002) 👻, the center of skateboarding culture in Valencia, where julianr3born is carrying on a legacy that started some 25 years ago. The Star, Moon and Sun greet customers coming for a board and trucks, but with a spirit of generational healing, they stick around for something more.

I am not adept at reading tarot in Spanish, but I have learned from the cards that it’s important to try, even in the face of fear. So I told him about these beautiful cards on his wall. The cards that take care of you after the Tower.

Like 9/11, I said. When everything changed. It takes the ancestors and the subconscious and the inner child, working together, to heal from such a tragedy.

In this case, these figures hold a skateboard, a commissioned piece of art building on the famed Rider-Waite deck that changed everything for those of us in the practice. And the skateboard signifies so much! The willingness to play and to fall down, to grab a tool that will carry you, the wheels that give life to an otherwise stagnant experience.

I have never skateboarded. I have no idea the difference between a kick flip and a ollie (an olley?).

But I know this journey after the Tower that leads to the World. And I sure as heck hope that you are paying attention to what happens after the Tower.

Because that’s where things starts really to get interesting. When you’re naked and kneeling by the stream, crying tears into the past and hoping the will grow something in the future.

We are all grieving so much. What can each of us do to create space for ourselves that also might create space for others?

During my first couple of weeks in Spain, I went to a read-in. Like a flash mob for reading. In a park. With a bunch of strangers. Where I pulled these cards while thinking about the purpose of a group like this.

The Six of Swords is one of my favorite grief cards, and the Knight of Swords is almost like the opposite. That’s too binary for the tarot, but the Knight of Swords is a taking action card.

At the start of the event, the coordinator explained that we were here to help counteract all the disconnection happening when we are perpetually online. He made it clear that the group () wasn’t against technology or social media — another call against the binary — but that the group wanted to offer a collective respite.

In this case: reading in public with strangers.

I was soothed seeing the Six of Swords, which spoke to me of our shared sadness/grief. I don’t know what each of these humans is carrying, but in this moment, they all held books in their hands. A simple tool that, although active like the knight, is also much slower and more passive than many of the other tools we reach for.

But it was the doing it together part that felt like the balm of the boat — and the knight on the horse.

We all got ourselves to this park with action. We chose to use the power that we have inside to step into the boat of unknowing. Of who we would meet or what this experience would be life.

But it felt so good to be with others who intentionally wanted to come together to heal this part of ourselves.

Thank you to the local Offline Club for this experience and to the cards for this wisdom.

The tarot cards did not play today, the day after the death of our great Dolly, who certainly embodied this card as so many others.

I was in middle school when I experienced what I have come to understand is Hierophant energy, when I started asking questions of the people who were telling me what was true. I asked them how they knew it was true. I didn’t like their answers.

Dolly did that. She is forever going to encourage each of us to think about challenging the systems that uphold power.

Who benefits from the truth you are fighting for?

I pulled the Death card today, just ahead of a visit to a cemetery with a friend who wasn’t sure she’d ever get to see her mom’s grave again.

Merlene and I met through Meals on Wheels, but over the past year or two, we’ve grown into friends. I’ve watched as she bravely faces her last chapter. We talked about her end-of-life plans today after we visited her elders’ graves in Thorndale.

She talks often of death, but she’s not ready to go. Are any of us? Is there ever enough time?

She’s not exactly the end of the family line, but she’s the last living sibling trying to make the most of every day.

The Death card helps me remember that where there is laughter and a a cold Dr Pepper and a long hug and a bowl of hot mashed potatoes at a small town diner, there is life.

A love letter from Paris!

This morning, the fabulous and got married in a garden near the Louvre, and then we went to lunch at the Eiffel Tower, where I pulled some cards in honor of the momentous day.

But let’s be real: love isn’t only for weddings or married folks or even people who want to be partnered. Love comes from many places and goes to many more. Don’t limit yourself to one source, and don’t forget the inner child you are healing with each act of love you offer and receive.

She keeps popping up, so I guess I better listen! The World is the ultimate Why. Why are we here doing this?

But you can break that down into other questions: What would you tell your deathbed self about the meaning of life? What’s the point of all of this but explain it like I’m three? I loved sitting on the Zilker lawn tonight with a friend and contemplating!

Tarot at with .jones.tx! Madie and I met two years ago through Airbnb Experiences and have kept up through the love of fitness, hobbies and making meaning out of the mess!

To kick off 2026, she invited me to read for the class, and these were the cards we talked about:

Hermit into the Wheel (for 2026)
Moon (for the new moon in Sagittarius)
Six of Pentacles into the Eight of Pentacles

We talked about finding our center in the dark, balancing the wild side you know with the even wilder one you don’t, and transforming work into Work through generosity and building beyond the binary.

Thank you for the invite to class, Madie!! Fellow riders, I loved sharing that space with you. ✨🌈🏳️‍🌈🦄🚴

Check out her class if you need a boost of self-care! It’s a dance party and place to let it all out. 😅😭🫶💯

Oh hai, new tarot deck!

I found this sweet dog-themed tarot deck at , and decided to break it in just up the way at .

Of course, I pulled the Fool card for myself. (Not uncommon in a new, if well-shuffled deck.)

And the Hermit card for a friend, which feels very appropriate for this heat!
