Before Atlantic City became dominated by casinos, one small sandwich shop on Arctic Avenue was already feeding locals, tourists and some of the biggest entertainers in the world.

White House Sub Shop opened in 1946, founded by Anthony “Tony” Basile and his relatives Basilia and Alfred “Fritz” Sacco.

The front of the building had previously been Basile’s tailor shop.

During World War II, when tailoring business was slow, his wife reportedly made sandwiches in the family kitchen and sold them through a side door using bread from Formica’s Bakery across the street. After the war, the family converted the storefront into a submarine sandwich shop.

The shop became famous for enormous subs made with crusty Atlantic City bread and generously piled meats, cheeses and toppings.

Its best-known creations include the White House Special, Italian subs and cheesesteaks. Much of the original Arctic Avenue location retains the tight, old-fashioned lunch-counter atmosphere that helped make it a local landmark.

The White House soon became a celebrity destination. Frank Sinatra was a devoted customer, and the shop’s walls filled with photographs and memorabilia connected to guests including Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Joe DiMaggio, Rocky Marciano, Oprah Winfrey and numerous Miss America contestants.

When the Beatles performed at Atlantic City Convention Hall in 1964, a gigantic 72-inch White House sub was prepared for the group.

The shop still displays photographs and keepsakes from its famous visitors...iincluding a towel from Sinatra’s final Atlantic City performance.

In 2000, the James Beard Foundation honored White House Sub Shop as one of America’s Classics, recognizing restaurants treasured for their food, history and connection to their communities.

Nearly eight decades after it opened, the original White House remains on Arctic Avenue.
