ā€˜Tis the season to be gifting šŸŽšŸŽ‰ 🧧
Bet you still have some people you haven’t got anything for 😰🤐 but it’s OK. We got you. EVERY self-respecting coffee drinker should know 2 things: 1ļøāƒ£ how to tell different coffees apart 2ļøāƒ£ how to brew a pour-over.

Pictured: coffee taster’s kit. ā˜•ļø We set you up with 3 different roasts of 3 different origins, a pour-over cone and mug, and some simplified ā€œcupping cardsā€ to write down inpressions along with printed graphic materials to help you put to words what you’re tasting āœļø šŸ“

Three different packages you can get to by checking ƉbrÄ«k IG story or biography.

We are excited to announce our partnership with the Council on American-Islamic Relations over Georgia (CAIR over Georgia). One of the most famous Muslim civil rights groups, CAIR does vital work to enhance understanding of Islam in Georgia, advocate and fight for the rights of Muslim civilians. Now there is an exciting new way to support the organization: by subscribing to coffee beans roasted locally and sourced ethically by ƉbrÄ«k. The profits of each and every purchase of this coffee go to CAIR over Georgia’s work challenging injustice in the law, workplace and institutions; empowering American Muslims; and doing away with misconceptions of Islam. Frinsa Estate, established 2010, was started by a couple, Pak Wildan Mustofa (second slide) and Ibu Atieq, now running 4 farms and counting. This is where we get our Indonesian Coffee, ā€œJakarta sunriseā€. In addition to using the traditional ā€œwet hullingā€ processing, they’ve also experimented with bacteria fermentation to achieve new flavors. While the farm’s operations are run by Wildan and administration and finances by Atieq, their son Fikri helps with processing.

When the family began, it raised eyebrows among town locals who grew palm sugar. Nowadays the government encourages coffee growing to combat deforestation (largely due to monsoons). Wildan and Arieq have given back to their community too, donating some of their land in Mekarwangi village to build a high school. Children that used to have to walk 10 km now can access school much more easily.

In recent years Indonesia has gone crazy for ā€œes kopi susuā€ (iced coffee with milk), especially in Jakarta, on the island of Java. The trend is that cold brew coffee, cold espresso or even cold unfiltered coffee (ā€œtubrukā€, similar to turkish coffee) is combined with condensed milk or creamer and usually simple syrup (sugar) or a variety of sweeteners.

Our ā€œSunrise in Jakartaā€ is a full-bodied Javanese mountain coffee with an earthy and vegetative aroma. It lands a heavy mouthfeel carrying notes of malt and cacao with a slightly winey acidity — a perfect compliment to any milk. Try it with oat milk and agave nectar!

Specialty coffee shops in Indonesia often sweeten with caramel sauce. You could also try something new for sweetener, like Monk fruit sugar or agave nectar!

Java has a centuries-long history if growing coffee, but it was only in recent decades that the entire country of tea drinkers has become coffee-savvy. Incidentally, selling bottles of prepared es kopi susu is what helped local businesses get through the 2020 pandemic lockdown after they were forced to close their doors.

How about that heat wave huh?! Summer is peaking, and every coffee drinker wants a glass of that perfectly refreshing iced coffee to hit the spot.

We’ve chosen a coffee from West Java to make tastebuds say ā€œyesā€.

With an earthy and vegetative aroma that might remind you of green peanut, this full-bodied mountain coffee from West Java lands a heavy mouthfeel carrying a note of cacao with a slightly winey acidity, and finishes with an herbal aftertaste. Drank hot, it's the kind of cup you might romantically drink around a campfire. But this hearty brew holds up well in milk and a natural sweetener will compliment it well, whether cold-brewed or brewed as a drip and chilled.

ā€œBe careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dream. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success. Always be on the lookout for ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success. Always be on the lookout for ways to nurture your dream.ā€

Our Colombian bean is prepared for roasting by AMACA, an association of women-owned small farms in Cauca(COW-cah) , Colombia.

The green beans are dried out by washed processing for a clean taste profile that really showcases the taste of the coffee’s origin. We’re roasting this as a Full City roast, also called ā€œfull mediumā€, where there’s just a slight sheen of oil on the surface of the beans, but because of wonderful subtle tastes of the origin and variety of coffee used, (an aspect of it is a bit like white grape, a refreshingly mellow crispness), we’re thinking we want to take it down to a ā€œCity +ā€ so we can bring out more of those flavors while keeping some of the body in the cup that our customers seem to like out of this bean.

What do you think? Do you have a favorite roast?

AMACA stands for Asociación de Mujeres Productoras Agropecuarias del Cauca. They are 140 smallholders strong, all women farmers and heads of household.

It’s finally happening. Partnering with the marvelous , together we’ve launched Atlanta’s first shared roasting facility at the in Castleberry Hill. In fact, it’s the only one in the Southeast as far as we know. This allows small businesses and hobbyists to break into roasting their own coffee without the massive upfront investments in equipment and property. Talent and dedication are what really make greatness, not luck and privileged connections. This is our contribution to a world where all of us can build our own.

2020 lockdown taught us many things: to be quick on our feet, to be grateful, and to be humbled by the support we’ve had from the ƉbrÄ«k Community. It also taught us that without a strong community, it’s hard for independent businesses to stay alive.

Last Friday we had our first showing. Stay tuned for upcoming events.

Big Coffee, we’re taking your place. The future is small batch.
